Training Camp, 12-10-2021

A spirited and long practice yesterday from the reports. I think this was a turning point, one in which after the Luka cut which no doubt raised some eyebrows and put everyone on notice, with a focus on what we need to work on more was emphasized: perimeter D, finding cutters, hard screens, getting to the FT line, etc. To what ever extent these are guesstimates, no doubt high and consistent effort and competitiveness was expected throughout.

So far the things that we want to do well and are doing well are a function of both intent and playing against one another :D . Terrific ball movement, more 3s, more transition play. Guys are actually running back on D and making some stops, too.

Tendencies: Jakob STILL missing bunnies on push shots in the key, and still missing FTs...

We're not shy about cross court swing passes to corners for 3s. A new wrinkle.

Drew just hammered a dunk that showed off his hops. Impressive athleticism. Great story from undrafted to two-way player to guaranteed contract.

Joe Weisy showing some athleticism and a nice stroke, too.

Primo isn't shy about making plays, and Devin is stepping up to take his shots, too.

Fun to see DJ and Derrick going up against one another.

Drew butterfingers in the 2ND Q

DJ in his element very smoothly showing an array of moves

Thad is coming along and Aminu in particular is showing more game than I thought he had. Moving to the right spots well and has 3 range. Good that Thad is showing range, too.

Fun to see Jakob and Drew banging down low. More effort and physicality on one rebound battle sequence than Luka showed all pre-season. Actually make that including all of last season as well. Too soon?

Keldon is happiest trotting around wrecking about, bouncy, smiling, making shots. The lone pick form the 2019 draft. Thank God we got the extra pick!

We're running more P&Rs and P&R handoffs and screen work in the second half.

Also some drive and kicks. Drew just hit a corner 3, followed by a floater in key. Both from DJ assists.

Interesting to see the chemistry developing among different guys. Doug and Jakob; DJ and Drew; Derrick and well just about everyone. Derrick is looking very light footed and bringing the ball up faster than in the pre-season games. Making his 3s and good finishes at the rim.

Aminu with some nice defensive hustle to run back and block from behind. Thad just got a block down low, too, and fought for and got an O board.

KBD had an end of Q O board putback (another one of those right position, right time plays that he has a knack for), and just took advantage of a D stop to drive right through the middle for a good finish.

Keldon court awareness - situation and decision - just showed where he can grow. KBD's O board was passed out to him and he too and missed a 3 with Bryn to his left waiting hands at the ready for a pass that never came.

Speaking of which, I think Devin just made an extra pass to Joe Weisy who finally hit a 3. He then ran down and stole an inbounds pass, made the extra pass himself to Devin in the left corner for a 3 and the lead.

Riveting 1.8 seconds left in the 3RD Q. Black inbounds to Bryn who gets loose and throws up a high arc tear drop for the tie!

It's really about what they run and how they execute, but fun nevertheless.

Newly engaged Joe Wiesy heating up from the arc. Nice to see him loose and in rhythm.

Finish at the rim with purpose, gents! Too many missed bunnies. *Eye twitch*

Some nice passes down the court, high low passes, and passes to back door cutters.

Jakob's **** horrible habit of **** finishing soft at the rim and missing is still **** there. It looks like he's throwing it up somewhere around the hoop softly hoping that the soft bounce will take care of the rest. Well it doesn't. It's **** mystifying and infuriating. And it's only a scrimmage...

DJ and Keldon getting to the line. Good to see.

KBD looks trimmer and moving well.

Keldon threw elbows errantly in the first half on a rebound, swinging on anyone around him; and he just barreled through poor Primo who it looks like got hit in the face on the way down and barely avoided getting stomped on for good measure. Easy mustang Wilder. No joke. His middle name is Wilder.

DJ just caused a bad Derrick pass, then drove assertively into Jakob (who had previously blocked him on a drive) but got called for an O foul and didn't like it. Competitive spirit. I like it. DJ just stepped into a 3 late in the 4TH Q. Like that, too.

It got a little loose towards the end, but everyone had good minutes, we ran some different sets, pushed the ball, and gave the fans a fun showing.

 Pop got on the court to make select players hit FTs. Misses=sprints.

First Keldon. Makes both.

Then Derrick. Makes both.

Finally, Pop throws the ball to Primo. Crowd gets excited, chants his name. First one juuust squeaks in. Gets into his rhythm, confidently and calmly sinks the second. Great to see!

The team gathered around him to congratulate and surely thank him. Hard not to love this young guy already.

I won't say who his FT routine and his demeanour reminds me of, but it's there.
