A SEGABABA after a missed opportunity is either a wake-up call or a deeper ditch. How we respond will determine which. We're capable of far better play but consistency of the requisite professional mental approach is what we must improve. That's really the core of it for tonight.

Solid start on O with the mid range and drives. We can't hit a 3 to save ourselves. That one possession where we had like 3 O boards and four missed 3s... oof. And of course they hit a bloody 3 on the other end.

Don't like Jakob sagging so close to the basket. He's not even contesting passes to their big who's at the elbows. I get it, he has to man the paint, but we're giving up wayyy to much in that area. What allows them to operate in our key is that pass to their big and we're leaving it uncontested and they run their sets from it.

1ST Q: SPURS 35

CLIPPERS 27

Jock "I can shoot the piss out of it" Landale is the first big off the bench and is grabbing boards, setting screens, andhitting 3s, making our only 2.

Our D overall is more active with really good switches so we're not stuck with bigs on perimeter as much. Good.

Good rebounding.

DJ's P&R and mid range is cooking.

Starters and bench working well together.

Back to back 3s for them on two most loathed plays - missed bunny on one end, Bryn getting lost in rotation slapping his hands at his sides like that'll help, we miss they push for another 3 in transition. Pop timeout.

2ND Q: SPURS 62

CLIPPERS 48

Well that was a great momentum build. Jock's certainly looking like he belongs, doesn't second guess himself on either end, so the shots, deflections, and help D blocks are all done with great fervor.

DJ is on absolute fire. Not just with his shots, either - was that the deepest 3 he's ever made? Ballsy. I like it. But also with his passing and defense. He's leading us, truly.

We look determined to put yesterday's debacle behind us. Pop's barking instructions on the sidelines. Quicker decisions with the ball, quicker shots, better rotations, and but for those behind the back passes they've made, we've contested outside shots better. Love the O boards work and points in the paint.

Derrick good on D but sucking the air out of our O again. Devin, too, oof. We need both to get going.

I expect us to be contested far more aggressively and for things to get more physical. we Have to stay the course, stay committed to our stingy D, transition pushes and ball protection. Respond to the physicality in kind.

Jakob's been getting blocked the last couple of games. He's taking it up like a guard with the ball out in front of him on a layup rather than with two hand for a dunk.

This is total role reversal from last night. Like I said yesterday, just sit back and let them figure out how to be more consistent.

3RD Q: SPURS 92

CLIPPERS 65

:o

Let's just keep the intensity going on both ends.

Terrific rebounding on D and O, great passing, great cuts, terrific finishes at the rim.

We have a bounce to our step and a purpose to us.

Lonnie showed some terrific straight up man D with legs moving, hands swiping, Devin with some strong run outs to contest, just a locked in, crisp performance.

Too many one and done shots by us right now. We were just up 30 and now it's 23 because we're settling for too quick shots with not enough construction and running down of the clock. Think it through, Spurs.

We're intent on being quick everywhere. And I LOVE it. Pop must have left their ears ringing after yesterday's game. Possibly on the flight over. The whole time.

Can you believe there's 5 minutes left in the 4TH Q and we're STILL only 4-6FTs?! We've had ONE FT in the second half...

4TH Q: SPURS 116

CLIPPERS 92

Can of whoop ass opened on us yesterday; we opened one tonight.

The 'Where was this last night?' question collectively asked is still hanging, but at least we responded to 'What are we going to do about it?' convincingly.

DJ was a man on a mission and got his sixth triple double of the season by the 3RD Q. He was assertive, made his favourite shots - top of the key, elbows, baseline Js, and the patented poke from behind steal for a dunk and accompanying release yell. He controlled the game making deft passes time and again, controlled the pace with relentless pushes in transition, controlled the defense by seemingly being just about anywhere we needed him to be - help defense pokes and steals, sealing up the baseline drives, deflecting passes, hustling after loose rebounds. Just a terrific two-way commanding performance.

I still really like Derrick (despite a couple of poor O games) and thought for a while that he was the better of the two, but DJ has clearly surpassed him. He convinced a skeptic, so full credit to a player with a troublesome past, with but one year in college, with a year missed, who put in a ton of work on just about every aspect of his game to emerge as a very good all around player. It's games like this that show how important the front of the spear PG position is. If a team doesn't get the right reads and decisions from the first point of attack, it all falls apart.

It just so happens we have at least two (and more in development) players who can run the point and DJ's stamp on the game 24 (10-22, 4-6 from 3!), 12 (3 on O), 13 assists, and 4 steals led us. All the starters finished in double figures, and we had six in total. Derrick struggled on O (15 on 6-14), 4 (2 on O), 4 assists, 1 steal, but bounced back with a team-high +22, and that's with a team-high 4 TOs. He looked rushed into some passes, more like he hoped they would make it rather than being sure, with predictable results. But he kept pushing, being aggressive, driving to break down their D.

Jakob had a resurgent game. We kept going to him inside to assert and establish our interior dominance where we trounced them 68-44. He was second in scoring with 17 on efficient 8-13, 1-3FTs, 11 (team-high 5 on O), second on the team with 5 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. He was a commanding force inside with help D blocks, tap outs that didn't register as O boards but ended up in our hands for secondary chances, set strong screens, made good DHOs and some crafty finishes at the rim.

Joining DJ and Jakob with a double double was Keldon with 12 on 5-13, 2-3 from 3, 12 (4 on O), one each of assist, steal, and block. Bully drives, Euro step drives, finesse finishes (though the left side was more troublesome for him tonight), and once again a terrific night from 3. He's better in off ball movement now, has a better handle to push defenders back, and the ball doesn't stick with him anymore.

It's funny how we signed Doug to be our 3s sniper but it's almost as much if not more the threat of his shot as the shot itself that's opening other scoring opportunities for him. he was 2-6 from 3, but 7-13 overall on timely cuts and slicing drives, one a baseline reverse through almost no space that drew some oooohs from the crowd, finishing with 16 points and 2 assists.

We outscored them from 3 on 12-37 (both above our average), outpaced them 50-114 to their 34-88, this on our SEGABABA, mind, outrebounded them 67(!)-43, including 23(!)-9 on O (both have to be close to the record this season if not topping it), 37-18 in assists. We got 10 steals on their 13 TOs from which we scored 12 points. The output attests to the determination we had to play this game differently from starters to the bench which outscored theirs 32-29. Pop extended the bench on the SEGABABA to ten main players. First big off the bench was Jock who immediately made an impact with his rebounding and making our first two 3s. He was a capable backup with 8 on 3-5, 5 (3 on O) and one each of assist and block in 14 minutes. He was much better on D with his help play, his activity on the boards, his spreading the floor and overall energy was so impactful.

He and Bryn were the only two bench players who made 3s. Bryn was Bryn on some defensive miscues (first play after he got subbed on, open 3 on a missed rotation by... someone), but he was also what we needed on O leading us with 10 on 4-9, 2-6 from 3 along with 4 boards and 4 assists.

Derrick (0-6), Lonnie (0-4), and Devin (0-4) struggled from the arc, but as a team we pushed through inefficiency with volume, and made timely ones enough (like Jock's two) to keep the floor spread and able to operate in the paint. Lonnie was less effective (6 on 3-9) and just 2 boards and pressed a bit. He finished a couple of athletic drives well, but in missing several other shots he took some outside the flow of our O, too early in the clock with nobody else touching the ball. On D, however, he really stood out again moving his feet to stay with drivers and cleanly active hands to threat pokes. Much better than the passive disappearances of the past when he'd put in a half assed move to drivers and he'd foul by reaching in with his hands.

Devin struggled on O (6 on 3-11) but was terrific defensively. He stood out with lane deflections, positioning himself to make drivers go the route he angled them to with our help D waiting. Solid rebounding (8, 4 on O), good team play (3 assists and 1 block), running out in transition and making good cuts time and again. Such a cool blend of fundamentals, BBIQ, skills, athleticism, and instincts.

DNP count - Thad, third game in a row. He high-fived Pop as we were leaving the court. Smart, that.

We were back to a strong, focused start, upended our middle two Q patterns, winning both, and by this point the game was a matter of staying even keeled. We did settle too much into one and done shots too early in the clock in the 4TH Q but rectified it in the latter half of it. The main thing was the mindset and outflowing energy from it that we'd have in this game and both were on point. Now for carrying it over to the next game as we work on our consistency in this aspect of our growth.
