Some thoughts on the game:
This was Wemby's first game since three or so weeks ago. Tough to get a rhythm after that and with a new team and with new sets, such as they were.
Great D is apparent right away. Five blocks is ridiculous. Handles are crazy good already with room for improvement, and is passing vision. His angles will be better than just about anyone else's. Didn't finish well at the rim but it happens (see point above). Looked a bit winded at times (same).
We didn't set him up well at times either so there was a lull in touches in the 3RD. But it's just the first time together.
He'll have to get into the habit of either using his body or keep the ball up high to prevent strips. Also, not driving into the key versus multiple defenders lol
Nice cuts and spacing and screens and timing on blocks. His recovery after getting bodied to jump to block is ridiculous. One of the many little things that make him so unique.
A near double double on bad efficiency, 5 blocks, would have had more assists had team mates not missed bunnies and it's a picture of the type of impact he can have even early in his career.
Julian did Julian things from the arc, off ball, and with putbacks and dunks. He also led us with 6 assists. 40% from 3. Was out best, most consistent player tonight.
Malaki is a burgeoning three-level scoring threat with now better court vision, more willing passing, and runs the P&R better. LOOK OUT for him this season.
Blake is fast and raw. Decisions to make the right play vs. make the play that makes him stand out still an issue, particularly when he has the choice between passing and driving vs. defenders in the paint. The latter wouldn't be so bad if he showed signs of finishing at the rim better but he's still exposing the ball. Still needs to get better at rotating to the right man and off ball D awareness. An absolute blur and you can see him trying to assert himself more. He'll get yelled at by Pop a lot this season. A LOT.
Dom does a lot of little things well and even though his consistency has to get better his BBIQ to recover in making the right play. More strength and coordination this season.
Only five points from out bench, only 1 from Sidy. His O is raw. His D is beastly already. He's legit a 1 through 4 stopped with his 6'7" 220lb frame, trunk legs, BBIQ, and coverage.
Just glad to have this one under our belt. We'll gel more.
Love that so many of our young 'vets' came to support the team. Can't wait to see them all playing together. I'm tired form all the excitement which is a long time coming. Onward!
