who do we want in this years draft? im thinking we'll have around the 24-28th pick.

my knowledge of college hoops isnt that great but everytime i turn on sports center it seems like hansbroughs got 38 points and 15 rebounds. on a couple draft sites hes not even on the board. not sure if that means we have a shot or hes staying in school.

draftexpress has us taking jason thompson of rider. real gm has us taking DeVon Hardin, california. both big men.

thoughts on what type of players we need, who you would like, who would be ideal?

i doubt we get another bigman with Splitter coming over. However when i think about it, if Horry retires and we get rid of Oberto then maybe we will.

I am kinda open into taking Jason Thompson given that he can spread the floor and he is the best rebounder in the NCAA.

Joe Alexander anyone?

I like Sam Young from Pittsburgh, big swingman

Brandon Rush from Kansas, long athletic swingman that is versatile, and who I'd say is a 1st-round talent

Tyler Smith from Tennessee, another multi-dimensonal athletic SF

I like Jason Thompson and DeVon Hardin a lot

Joe Alexander, very interesting player. Seems like he'd be a fitting support player as a big, mobile, tough foward. Just have to see him more. I really like the sound of him.

Wayne Chism I think would be a nice canidate as a 2nd round pick, from Tennessee

We have a team policy against drafting NCAA players. We'll grab a 30yr old from a foreign team who won't step foot on an NBA court for another 5 years.

The more and more than I think about it we should try and trade up for Alexander. I like his game. He is a respectable rebounder and isn't a offensive liablity like Bowen and at times Udoka.

I see alot of bigmen stock is going down like Hibbert, one of the Lopez twins,Thompson, and etc but i feel we are pretty much set with Ian and Splitter.

I would like a point guard but none really stands out... I would like Westbrook but he seems to be a lotto pick as of today.

I think most likely we'll get an SF/SG, as well

Definitely enjoyed how Joe Alexander played tonight... saw him in a few chunks of the 2nd half, including the last 3-4 mins of the 2nd into OT (when he fouled out early there).

18 pts, 10 rebs, scored in multiple ways, showed his agility and toughness. Also liked how he played low-post defense on a possession against Josh Duncan. Think he may of got a nice blocked shot as well. Tied up the game with a post-up turn around jumper, but missed the go-ahead FT on the three pt play, which then went to OT. Made a nice bounce pass from the high-post to somebody for a lay-up in OT.

I like Alexander , he missed a FT.... he is spur type of guy. He does alot of things that I would want a SF to do, and I love that he is a really respectable rebounder.

I also liked what I saw from Duncan... I wouldn't mind if we spent a 2nd rounder on him.

i have issues with alexander. he has no range outside of 18 ft or so (11/40 from the college 3 this year). while a gifted athlete, his body type lends itself to a high center of gravity and low foot speed. those things usually lead to poor perimeter defense against smaller, quicker players (which he is very likely to find from nba small forwards). i dont hate alexander, and i think he would make a fine pick, but he isnt one of my favorite players.

that designation goes to brandon rush and courtney lee at the moment. everyone know about rush. hes got an very promising frame (a shade under 6'7", 210+ lbs, very good wingspan). he has very good range on his shot (44% from the college 3 on just over 5 attempt per game). and he has all the tools to be a solid perimeter defender.

courtney lee doesnt boast the same wonderful frame that rush does (6'5", 200 lbs, very average wingspan), but makes up for that in other area. despite his shortcomings, lee has an nba ready body (not as explosive as you would like, but very strong and rather quick), and has instincts/bballIQ to match. these plus his excellent maturity and a "team first" attitude make him one of the most nba ready wings in our range, if not overall. hes got very good range (40% from 3 on just under 5 attempt a game) as well as having a very good mid-range game too. hes also a very good defender despite his frame (averaged just under 2 steal a game in his 4 years).

as for the 2nd round, its still far to early to say. we still have no idea how may or may not declare (and then pushing others down), whos coming back, and which euro prospects may or may not throw their hat into the ring. but id figure it might be a usual spurs draft on that end; look for them to go foreign or trade at least one of our two 2nd round picks.

Well, I didn't realize that on his body-type about Alexander. As I just only have so much on him, and only really knew about him some days ago.

Extending his shooting range is questionable, but it's still just that, a question.

I still like his game overall, though.

theres still a fair bit of unknown about the kid, mainly because hes been such a late bloomer. didnt start playing organized ball until his junior year of high school where he couldnt get off the bench, and averaged about 1 point in about 3 minutes per game his freshman year. so in that respect, there is a bit of upside to him than others in his class.

this summer, he put on a good bit of weight (was in the 200-210 lbs range, now is around 230 lbs). he has a rather high center of gravity, which is usually a bad thing when it comes to perimeter defense (harder to get into a lower defensive stance). add in his iffy lateral quickness, and you see why he gets beat by smaller, quicker players. and with his build, there are a lot of nba small forwards that are going to fit into that "smaller, quicker" category. he has shown himself to be a very good athlete though, so its not like he would be a liability out there. maybe just not as good as some would like.

he has shown a very good mid-range game, and some ability to operate on the low block, where he may be able to punish those smaller, quicker players. he has a great work ethic, and while the game doesnt come naturally to him like so many other touted prospects, he has worked hard every step of the way to get where he is now.

hes a very intriguing prospect, and because of that, i dont even think hes on the board when we pick. and if he was, id have no problem with taking him. i just have a somewhat rigid view of what i want out of a wing in this draft, with 3pt range and man-to-man defense being two of the most important pieces. and alexander seems to be very lacking in one, and has serious questions in the other.

We all know the Spurs will draft some unknown foreign prospect and farm him out for 2-3 years.

^^^ Yeah, it kind of sucks to hear about some great prospect (eg. Splitter) and know that he doesn't join the team right away.
