It means Ian will do Summer League with the team, Pop counts on him for next season.
Nothing new, but it's good to hear that.

I hope he is a rotation player for us already. There isn't much for him to prove in the D league, he did everything that was asked.

Ian Mahinmi is a very talented bigman, with an above average ability with post moves and blocking.
Not a very outstanding rebounder, but everything else he does will definitely make up for it.
I say he averages 8 and 5 next season.

agreed, ian played above average in the d league and was named 1st team. thats pretty darn good. im optimistically hoping he will be better than just a rotational player. only time will tell.

I hear his athleticism is great, which is a huge need for us..I think we'll definitely see him(or should see him) next year as a rotation player..I don't see any reason he wouldn't be able to join the team and play off the big 3..athletic finish, rebounding, shot blocking..I don't see why he wouldn't be able to give us all 3 next year..

this guy is in a perfect situation..he's playing for the best coach in the NBA..he's playing next to one of the best big men ever..he's playing with 2 guys that can penetrate and create for others..he doesn't need to do THAT much to make an impact for the Spurs..

I'm excited to see him too, i think he warranted a spot on the roster last year, but i'm very impressed with his NBDL season, being named in the all first team has got translate so something good in he NBA.
If he can come in make 4-5 shots around the basket, and grab 5-8 boards, don't foul too much and make some big blocks i'll be impressed.
I'm hoping he can develop into a starter by 2010.

The more and more that I think about it... I am kinda glad that Splitter is not coming over. Trying to easy the pain...lol. Anyways Thorpe, the trainer who has worked with Kevin Martin and company says he is an unbelievable prospect. I think he will be better than most of the recent French big men that have come over. Better than Petro and Ronnie.

im just not as optimistic as you guys. i dont think he makes any real impact next season. hes still SO raw, beyond what i believe some you yall even think. yes, he posted decent numbers for the toros last season (17 & 8), but the level of talent in the dleague is abysmal. is about on par with a 2nd division euro league. he still fouls at a rather high rate (only going to be magnified at the nba level), his instincts as well as his skill set are still very basic, and hes still not carrying as much weight as i would like to see (but hes getting there).

Yeah...if he gives us a 6/6 I would be still be happy. I am not sure if there is any big man in the draft that can contribute more than him.

I definitely wouldn't draft a big man..I'd be disappointed if we did..

honestly, I don't see why he can't make an impact, even if he's so raw..

we aren't going to be running post plays for him..we aren't gonna be running any plays for him at all..his role will simply be to feed off Duncan and the rest of the team..rebound..block shots..the guy is definitely athletic enough to make an impact IMO..Elson looked good here for a while, and Mahinmi is younger and can play the same athletic role..

I'm not expecting him to start or anything..but he can come off the bench..he can practice with the team and learn from one of the best bigs ever..he'll definitely learn a lot from Duncan and Pop..either way, it'll be good for his development..

and i think thats almost twice the contribution he would have for us. i dont think he would be any more impactful than elson was two years ago. for example, a player like johan petro (another french big who was nearly as raw as ian when he was drafted) has three full nba seasons under his belt, and he cant muster up 6 & 6. i just cant see ian putting that up with just a year in the dleague under his belt.

I think Ian is better than Petro... Elson was just a 5/5 guy along with Oberto when he was in the rotation. I just hope you are wrong about him and that Pop will play the little youth that we do have instead of sticking with Horry.

Horry may retire at this point. He had a great career with 8 titles under his belt. With Ian coming into the rotation, we know that he's expected to to contribute to the Spurs from the defensive standpoint and chip in on offense when neccessary. Since pressure isn't the issue here, his numbers should be modest probably around 5 & 6 a game.

Depending who is available I wouldn't mind at all drafting a big in the 2nd round.

like most have mentioned, we should trade up or aqcuire another 1st rounder. that would help us out in securing another talented big.

I brought up Sasha Kaun some time back in another forum. He reportedly had better workouts than DeAndre Jordan. Chad Ford reports in his latest mock draft on espn.com that Kaun has a big offer on the table from the new Russian league. Consequently Ford has him falling to #60 in the draft to Boston! I wonder if SA couldn't convince him to stay in the US if they drafted him with their 3rd pick? I predict he will have a better career than most of the big men listed ahead of him in Chad Ford's draft, and that he will be a very good career backup.

The Spurs have other needs and a crowded front court, that said I wouldn't be terribly upset if they were to pick Kaun with the 57th pick. The only big man pick I'd like to see is Hendrix at 45, then we'd have pretty much every type of big there is.

I think people are overrating Ian's fouling problems, he improved dramatically in that area during the course of his d-league season. He should definitely be able to provide some Carl Landry style production from us next season.

I'd love to get one of Hendrix, White, and while less likely, Joey Dorsey in the 2nd round.

yea hendrix with the 45th would be nice.
