Marc Stein had this nugget of info...

5. San Antonio's desire to acquire one more big man (preferably a floor-stretching big man) to counter the Lakers and Boston is no secret.

The surprise stems from the rumbles I've heard about Detroit free-agent-to-be Rasheed Wallace, he who is chief among the Pistons unsettled by the realization that big changes are undoubtedly coming in that locker room, having legit interest in joining the Spurs to team up with his 2005 NBA Finals nemesis Tim Duncan.

Don't see a real trade possibility here -- given that the Pistons are unlikely to take back anything other than expiring contracts for the expiring deals possessed by Wallace and Allen Iverson unless they have a chance to trade for someone like Stoudemire or Chris Bosh -- but it's something to file away for free agency

Well there is no way to trade for him, but maybe in the offseason we can sign him with the MLE.

More likely the Spurs could go after him during the offseason since they lack the better deal to trade for him at this point.

I have no doubt he could contribute, but I just wish it was 2004 Sheed and not the current version. I've only seen a handful of Piston games but he has been awful in all of them.

A change of scenery could be all he needs, though. Problem is I don't think we have enough trade assets to swing a deal right now.

Agree with everyone about the Spurs not having the pieces to make a deal work right now. But this offseason I would think the Spurs would be a pretty attractive option for a guy like Sheed. Assuming of course that the Spurs aren't holding out hope for cap room in 2010 and don't want to offer up anything other than a 1 year contract. If the Spurs were willing to do 3 years of full MLE I think Sheed would seriously consider taking it.

Careful with that word. The last time the Spurs had craziness on the team, he nearly took the team apart.

I would love Sheed on the spurs !

Best defensive frontcourt. Bowen/Duncan/Sheed.

We need something this season though, and I really doubt we have the pieces to trade for Sheed.

SportsNation Marc Stein: (5:51 PM ET ) Sheed, from what I'm told, is very interested in going to San Antonio. And the Spurs would naturally love to have him. But it is difficult to imagine any sort of trade that could make that happen in the next 10 days, so as previously stated this is most likely something to file away for free agency.

Rasheed would bring a title here this season, but it's not going to happen..I think we'll have a trade, but not for a big name..we don't have the assets..

next year's team should be better than this year's though..

take out Udoka, Vaughn, and Oberto..add in Mahinmi(hopefully), Gist, Hairston..maturity of Hill, another year in the system for Mason..add Sheed with the big 3, Bonner, Bowen and Thomas..solid looking team right there if everything goes to plan..

He's the types of player we need this year. But a role player, not a guy that still thinks he's the mane. We don't need a guy chucking it at will either. So, a motivated Sheed focusing on rebounding and defense and without the volume shots would be great this season.

This is just hypothetical though since we don't have a large dead-weight contract to pass their way.

Since we can't get him though, who else like that is out there and obtainable? Not a name, the skills we need?

Maybe that's just me but I'd take Camby over Sheed in a heartbeat. He just seems like a Pop-type that could get in line and excel in his role. He'd give us the things we need too: interior defense, defensive rebounding, offensive-glass follow-ups and MORE defense.

Au contraire, Camby's gambling and offensive inability to spread the floor vs sheed's fundamentals and 3pt shot...

Sheed is sort of an Horry with shot blocking.

Agreed. I think he'd be just about perfect for what we need, and would complement TD nicely.

Escargot, Camby could play defense in his hypothetical role with the Spurs. He'd probably come off the bench for the rest of the year, why mess with a good starting lineup with Mad-Bomber-Bonner? As a role/bench player, like Manu and Hill, he'd bring in the energetic style of play. Burn the energy and hustle it up. I think he'd fit in nicely.

We have Bonner to spread the floor. We need a change-of-pace type that brings in the traditional defensive big man and rebounding skills in the paint.
