The New Jersey Nets have spoken to San Antonio, Chicago, Cleveland and, surprisingly, Toronto about guard Vince Carter, the Newark Star-Ledger is reporting.

The Spurs are reportedly weighing up whether Carter would push them over the top in the West, but with San Antonio's salary structure being top-heavy, it's hard to see how a deal would be worked out.

Hmm how about that one?

No thanks. The only deal the Spurs need to be thinking about right now is for a center. Besides, unless the Spurs are going to give up Manu in the deal there's no way to make the salaries match up.

Let's trade for Carter.

We'd probably have to throw in Rasho to make salaries work out.

Getting VC would mean pullin a Mavs and gut some of the roster to obtain him.

Vince is making $14.7M

San Antonio would have to hand out several players, but it could be worth it. Also, I'm assuming New Jersey accepts 2010 friendly contracts:

Kurt Thomas
Bruce Bowen
Matt Bonner
Ime Udoka
2009 1st round pick

($12.1M)

However, the problem lies with the number of guarenteed contracts the Nets has. I'm guessing a third team would have to be involved. But San Antonio can offer New Jersey a 2010 package as well as a 1st rounder, despite the fact it's be in the late 20's. Yes, some teams might be able to offer better packages, but will they? If they don't, I don't see anything wrong with such an offer from San Antonio.

^^^ The Spurs are thin up front as it is. If they trade away Thomas and Bonner that leaves Duncan and Oberto as the only two PF/C on the roster. Also, the Spurs traded away their 2009 1st round pick in the deal to get Thomas.

Oh, I thought the Spurs moved their 2010 pick. My mistake.

I do see the problem with getting thiner in the front-court. But if Carter is acquired, doesn't that make Roger Mason available for a possible big man?

If we can keep Manu and get VC i'm all for it.
Our backcourt scoring would be INSANE!!! Can you imangine VC starting against the lakers, along with Parker and TD and then he goes off and we have Manu coming in.
We would be thin up front, so maybe if we give them Fin instead of KT or Bonner (Fin's contract expires in 2010 right?)

All the Spurs weaknesses this year can be found in the paint. There's too many good teams who have size advantages against the Spurs, the Spurs get outrebounded too many times and they give up too many points in the paint. Vince Carter doesn't solve any of those problems. Offense isn't the Spurs problem. They're scoring enough points. It's controlling the paint which needs to be addressed. This team needs a guy like Brad Miller way more than it needs Vince Carter.

We really don't have much to dangle at the nets for VC.

Miller is a decent rebounder, but his defense hasn't been the same since his pre-Sactown yrs. Playing under Rick Adelman early on has spoiled him to where he really doesn't play that hard on defense. At least offensively he is reliable at the passing game and is known for his mid-range game which can help spread out the offense.

I don't get why our name is coming up in all these trade rumours. We famously have virtually no trade bait, as our Big 3 are not going anywhere.

I just don't see us getting VC, Brad Miller etc. when many other teams could offer so much more than our flotsam.

As I've said before though, I'll be happy to be proven wrong on this.

Miller's D certainly wouldn't make any Spur fans forget David Robinson.....or even Rasho Nesterovic for that matter. But still, Miller would be a guy who you could put on Bynum or Gasol and not have to worry about him giving up 4 inches and 30 pounds.

All this being hypothetical of course because unless the Kings are willing to make a deal like Memphis made with Gasol then the Spurs don't really have much to offer.

We have a bucket of suck when it comes to trade assets.

I just think all these teams are blowing smoke out of their asses.

My guess is that writers are just looking for teams that have contracts that expire in 2010, and the Spurs do have a decent amount of those. The Nets want to get in on the Lebron chase and they'll need to dump Carter's contract to do that.

Well if we end up pulling out the '09 version of the Great Gasol Robbery, I'll be happy.

If we get a player like VC simply because the Nets are daydreaming about grabbing Bron in '10, all the better for us.

Yeah good point. I mean, getting Brad Miller is pretty far fetched - but VC?? Come on.

I might be in the minority, but I believe we can win without pulling off a trade. Obviously there are things that we need to better our chances, but I'm confident (cautiously though) with what we have at present.

As long as we're healthy and Pop is coaching and we have our Big 3, we'll be a threat.
