Kings and Gooden talking buyout

Post#1 » by Nolan » Mon Mar 2, 2009 2:47 am

from the wiretap,

We need some help in the frontcourt next to Duncan and I think he would be a good fit if he's bought out. I guessing if he does get bought out it will come down to three teams us, Cleavland and the Lakers.

What do you guys think, do we have a shot?

I'm a Cavs fan and think Gooden could end up with the Spurs. Joe Smith is the Cavs' target per the insider on another Cavs' forum. Gooden can be a bit of a space cadet but can provide a bit of athleticism and a mid range jump shot off the bench for you guys. Pop and your veteran players would have to stay on Gooden's case to make sure his head's in the game but he should help you guys if he's healthy.

Officially bought out. We are the frontrunners. Although I dont understand how this works as I understood today was the last day to sign to qualify for playoffs? And doesn't he have to clear some sort of waivers before being free to sign elsewhere? Can anyone explain?

Edit: To answer my own question, I guess Sunday was the final day you could reach a buyout in order for the player to clear waivers in time for a team to sign him and be eligible for the playoffs. Making Wednesday the final day to sign a playoff eligible player.

If I had to guess, you guys will get him. CLE is going after Joe Smith and previously traded Drew.

He will be a nice fit in SA actually IMO, I hope he signs with you guys

I've never rooted for a team that Gooden has been a part of. However, I watch a lot of hoops and this guy is honestly one of the lowest bball IQ players I've ever had the displeasure of watching. He makes so many silly errors it hurts. I guess if anyone can beat that out of him it's the Spurs organization. However, I really don't think this is the guy you're looking for.

I'm not sure what this adds to the Spurs. Kurt Thomas does what Gooden does, only much better. You guys already have Pops, Mahinmi, Oberto, and Bonner. Unless you guys waive Pops, you'll be clogged with bigs.

Kings fan here. Warning- Gooden brings baggage with him in the form of a poster you will soon meet. He will tell you Gooden is better than Duncan, be dead serious, and repeat it over and over.

I hope you guys get Gooden though, I really think he can be the thing to put you over the Lakers... Good Luck.

Your first part is right: A player must be waived by Sunday midnight in order to be eligible for the playoffs.

However, they dont have to be signed immediately after clearing waivers. You can sign him in 2 weeks & he's still eligible for the playoffs since he was waived in time.

Gooden & Smith will shop themselves & try to get best deal. However, I dont see Cleve even considering bringing Gooden back.

Question for you Spurs fans: Say that Gooden did sign with the Spurs. Would it be better to immediately start him or have him off the bench?

BTW i feel that he & Duncan would work great together.

Even though i hate Gooden, he is a very good rebounder and something we badly need. I'm all for signing him, he'll be a huge help against the bigs in the West.

Gooden doesn't perform well off the bench. As a starter he will give you 12-15pts and good rebounding (especially offensive reb).

His individual man D isn't even that horrible, but his help/team defense is atrocious. As in historically atrocious. I was thinking it might work in SA because Duncan could help cover for him?

Overall, I'd be pretty happy if we signed him, he's a nice upgrade in areas where we could use improvement, help. Defensively, we'll just have to go with it, maybe a lot of it'll be overblown.

Drew Gooden is the 2nd best big on this team and I could argue he is as good as Tim Duncan on any given game. I am hoping the Cavs bring Drew back but it doesn't look like it. Adding Drew Gooden will dramatically improve this team. I am still in shock the Kings would release a star player like this who is in his prime and completely dominated the lone game he played for them while not being anywhere near recovered from the groin strain. To the poster who compared Kurt Thomas to Drew Gooden shame on you. Drew Gooden is ten times the offensive player then Kurt Thomas.

I agree Boozer. Goodens man to man D is very underrated. Drew Gooden is much more then a 15ppg scorer. I have followed this mans career from day 1 and I swear to god he can almost score at will along with being a top 10 rebounder in this league. Adding this kind of talent is a no brainer. This is an allstar level player we are talking about here who has never had a fair chance in his nba career.

Whatever he lacks defensively he can more and make up for it offensively and on the glass along with being a great lockroom presence and being involved in the community. I honestly believe had the Cavs kept Gooden we get past the Celtics and win the championship. Gooden is excellent at playing against KG. Gooden should have 4 allstar games or more under his belt if he was getting starters minutes and touches during his career.

Well Spurs fans. I think you may have one more reason to not want Gooden.. ^

G4L is part of his contract.

See I tried to warn you guys yesterday... Gooden4life may be the sole reason we bought out Gooden (besides the 2 million saved). I'm honestly in tears reading his posts on multiple team boards.

Gooden is a good scorer and rebounder, but erases all that with his HORRIBLE defense. It really is that bad. But if you guys get him I can't think of a better situation for him to possibly get motivated to play D with Pop and Duncan playing alongside him.

Also since he comes with G4L, I don't think he is worth signing.

Obviously this poster doesn't know much about Goodens defense. His defense isn't that bad he just doesn't help defense sometime. His man to man d is fine.

If they pick him up, he won't start. He doesn't know the offense nor the defense. And until you perfect the defensive scheme and rotation that SA runs (which takes time) you are regulated to short spurts of reserve mins, if you are good enough.
