Gooden Commits to Spurs

Post#1 » by SMRattler » Wed Mar 4, 2009 1:47 am

From Yahoo and ESPN:

http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news;_ylt=A ... &type=lgns

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3949639

Two sources sounds good enough to me. Hope this works out. I'm not a big fan of his nor am I sold on what he can do to help, but it couldn't hurt and most people seem to think he will help quite a bit.

Hope for the best.

Low risk, high reward possibilities. Good move.

We needed some depth and energy up front hopefully he can provide that and hopefully that sports hernia is not that big of a deal.

On a side note I think Joe Smith would have been a much better fit.

You basically now have a more athletic Duncan with more range and post moves but lacks the on the defensive end, especially help defense. You now also have one of the best rebounders in the league and by far the best baby hook from either the left or right block. You basically just added another allstar for 1.5 million and I now have the Spurs winning the West after making this move.

Yup, agree. Not sure what to expect right now. But it can't hurt. And it might actually help.

I like the addition. He's on the cheap, he's a solid 12ppg, 8rpg guy (almost 50% shooting as well, not bad). I'm not saying he automatically gets us out of the west, but as already mentioned it's a potential low-risk, high reward move that really had to be made.

If he can produce statistically as well as he has over the course of his career to date, I'll be happy. He has the chance to be our most potent big man since Robinson retired in 2003 (not counting Rasho of course).

And he's under 30! Bonus!

You'll learn to tune Gooden4Life out rather quickly.

As for Gooden, he is literally the worst big man defender in the world today. He rotates the wrong way, constantly. He can score inside and out, but generally sticks to the out these days. Good rebounding instincts, but he's only of backup calibre. Not that there's anything wrong with that, though. Stick with Bonner as the starter and essentially you've just upgraded Oberto. Which is fine.

Haha. Man, Realgm really has some random player tuggers going around. Im from the Warriors board and we have a couple that want to blow Jamal Crawford off as well. If this guy hangs around your board you guys will quickly end up hating Gooden because of him, just like we hate Crawful now.

On a side note. Really good pick up and from what I hear a real team guy. Can hit the 20 footer and can rebound the ball well and hopefully will provide Timmy D with the help he needs up front (Not that he really needs help). I hope this gives you guys enough to roll the Fakers. Good lucks Spurs.

It's a steal for the Spurs, why would you want old Joe Smith when you could get Gooden who is younger, and he is underrated. He played a big role for Cleveland helping them go to the finals and there defense was pretty good. His "poor" defense as one of you guys pointed out is not true, and even if he was like you say in San Antonio it is about Team Defense. You guys are underrating him as defender now, thats what he does defends/rebounds he is not a great scorer. Under 30 is great too, players like this usually don't get released. I think they should move Duncan to Center and start Gooden at the Power Forward. Duncan is 7 feet so you can put him at Center and not to compare Gooden at all not even close because David Robinson is hall of fame talent, but the best big man Duncan has played since him. Gooden is a steal for middle of the season free agency.

However, I read some report about some Sports hernia injury that he had before the signing. Whats up with that, I guess he is healthy enough since the Spurs did sign him. They said he might have needed season ending surgery and that is why I thought kings released him. I guess because there cutting costs, which is sad to see any nba team do.

It's not just true, it's other worldly true.

and even if he is in San Antonio it is about Team Defense.

Yes, that's the bit that he sucks at. He has never been able to grasp quite where he is supposed to rotate to and when, and despite all his strength he doesn't use it. The Spurs best bet is to have him take any man to man post defense matchups and have Duncan as the help defender, but it won't be much fun when Drew's paired with someone other than him.

You guys are underrating him as defender now, thats what he does defends/rebounds he is not a great scorer.

At this point I am absolutely convinced that you are thinking of someone else. Fun fact: Drew Gooden's PER against is 21.2 or 23.3, depending on whether you want him guarding power forwards or centres.

I'm mostly excited about Gooden for his rebounding, we've been poor this year and Duncan badly needs help in that dept. Whilst i've never been a big Gooden fan, i think he can contribute well, even if it's 5ppg and 8rpg

Nice Pick up. Wish we had a spot for him in Boston.

He always seemed to kill us when everyone was watching Lebron. I think he'll do the same when teams are overly concerned with Duncan, Parker or Ginobili.

Nice pick up for the spurs. I hope the groin injury doesnt cause him to miss any games. He can really use all of the remaining games to learning the spurs system.

Return to San Antonio Spurs
