Trade Duncan?

TD is getting to the end of his career, do you think it would be a good move to dump him for some young talent and pieces to build the next dynasty around Parker/RJeff? David Robinson stepped aside when he got old, and the team benefited greatly from it.

especially with some nice pieces available in 2011 FA. Spurs would be a great contender to lure a young stud.

I wonder what he was expecting from posters when he started the thread, LOL. Spurs are looking to win now and the guy is talking about going after young ****.

I was expecting ppl to be honest about the team. Not this yr, but maybe next yr (hence my talk of 2011). Fact is, Duncan does not have many yrs left, and has already seen some decline. I happen to be a Knicks fan and I think that Ewing's reluctance to become a role player and our eventual trading him without receiving future talent in return led to many yrs of frustration for us. I'm not trying to start a fight here, but let's be honest. Maybe TD can take reduced $$$ to free up cash (especially with a retracting cap) as his career winds down and it becomes TP's team, or maybe a trade. Either way, even while the Spurs are in win now mode, they have some good rising stars and certainly do not want to compromise their future.

Ewing won no titles. Duncan won 4 titles and the Spurs still hope to win a title. If Duncan is traded for young players there wont even be a chance for a title. As simple as that.

I think this just needs clarification. When I say "young players" i mean "young" relative to how old the Spurs are. TD makes 22 million. If he takes a cut say to 12 mil to preserve the team (and I think he might b/c hes a great team player), a FA such as David West ('12) could really help him out in the paint. Getting rid of Duncan altogether could get you someone like Amare ('10 or '11) or Bosh ('10), who can put you in title contention for the next 8-10 yrs.
As far as Ewing goes, he was not as good as Duncan, but don't compare them with rings. Duncan plays with All-stars that Ewing could have only dreamed of playing with. Let's also not forget that Timmy would have either 0 or 1 ring if he played in the era of a prime MJ.
A lineup of Parker/Mason/RJ/TD/West w/Ginobili off the bench could win a title.
A lineup of Parker/Mason/RJ/McDyess/Amare w/Ginobili off the bench could win a title.

This will never happen. Duncan isn't just a franchise player; he IS the franchise.

Right now we're a title contender with Duncan, one of the greatest players to play the game and guy who knows how to win. So you're proposing that we deal him while we're a contender so that we can contend in the future? You're logic makes no sense.

Thing is, we're still a title contender.. So there's no point in trading Duncan. If we got kicked out in the 1st round again and the Spurs decide that Duncan and Manu is just not as good anymore, then I can see the Spurs trading Manu or Duncan to a team so that they have another chance at a title while we get some youth to build for the future.
But that's not where we are right now.

I would trade Duncan in my NBA live 09' game but not beyond that.
First you pointed out that he is getting up in years and has a significant contract...who is willing to take an aging all-time great with bum knees for 20+ mil and give up "young" talent in return. How hard do you think it would be to lock up TP to a long term contract if the Spurs just **** canned TD after he gave us all those years. Now if TD is one of those stars that wants to play way beyond his prime then sure shop him around but I don't expect to see Duncan playing past his contract. TD is one of those rare stars that will start and end his career in one city. Lucky for us its here in San Antonio.

Duncan´s game in about finesse, not athleticism. He´ll not lose many steps. I can see him playing his last season as a 15/10/4 player, along with 2 blks.

Spurs fans are generally very loyal to our organization and players, just as our players are usually loyal to their fans and organization, just as our organization is usually loyal to the players and fans.
Your idea will not see much steam here.

I am fairly certain TD retires as a Spur.
As for the players that the OP mentioned as his replacement - West or A'm''a'''r''''e''''', I'd still take a 30-something Duncan over them.

My heart was already broken when we traded Rasho. Duncan would just be too much for me.
