According to NBA.com

SAN ANTONIO

DA's Offseason Rank: No. 1

Last season: 54-28, first place, Southwest; Lost in first round of playoffs.

Added: F Richard Jefferson (trade with Milwaukee), F/C Antonio McDyess (free agent, Detroit; three years, $15 million), C Theo Ratliff (free agent, Philadelphia; one year, $1.3 million), F DeJuan Blair (second-round draft pick)

Lost: F Bruce Bowen (traded to Milwaukee), F/C Kurt Thomas (traded to Milwaukee), F/C Fabricio Oberto (traded to Milwaukee), F Drew Gooden (signed with Dallas)

Retained: None

The key man: C Ian Mahinmi. Any chance that a post-Tim Duncan era will amount to squat depends on whether the 22-year-old Mahinmi is ready for prime time.

The skinny: Incredible work by GM R.C. Buford to retool a still-good team and make it a contender again. The Jefferson deal is this offseason's version of the Gasol Heist of '08; with RJ on the floor the Spurs aren't held hostage by Manu Ginobili's deteriorating body parts -- though a healthy Manu is the key to a potential title run. Bad knees or not, Blair was a great second-round pickup, and McDyess classes up any locker room.

San antoions front office is ONE of the best not only in the NBA but in sports oresently speaking.

SA broke breaking news first and kept continuing to add pieces. yeah BOS picked up wallace which was huge and ORL and CLE added some depth and LA was able to obtain artest and keep odom. but SA kept on attaining pieces that will fit that team. I agree wit the article.

check main boards > NBA discussion, people are talking about RJ being insanely overrated and how Mcdyess is actually a bigger addition than RJ.

Yeah I saw that one and I thought to myself, "Damn some people have to be either crazy or flat out ignorant if they think adding Jefferson for nothing is overrated.."

I agree that the Spurs made the most improvements this offseason but I doubt that it was enough to win the title. DeJaun Blair @ 37 was epic and the Richard Jefferson trade was incredibly lopsided. McDyess is a true professional and pairs nicely with Duncan. I still view the Lakers as the best team in the West because they have fewer health concerns and the addition of Artest was huge. If the Spurs make it past the Lakers then RJ and Ginobili will have to be playing out of their minds (and better or at least as good as Artest and Kobe). The Spurs had the best offseason, sure, but looking good on paper doesn't always translate. They'll have the fourth best regular season behind the Celtics, Lakers and Cavs.

I honestly don't think that we'll end up with the best regular season anyways. Pop wants to keep the guys fresh so that would mean sacrificing a few games because our big 3 aren't playing 38 minutes a game.

The Spurs made the most improvement this year but I'll say it's enough to put them back in the mix of title contenders. It's not like we made deals that all of the sudden put us a level above the Lakers and everyone else. It simply place us on the same talent level.

Honestly thou, talk about lopsided deals, I'm glad we got Jefferson but if I had to choose between getting Jefferson or Gasol, I'd still take Gasol. LA got a bigger lopsided deal.

I like that we didn't stand by with the status quo and live under the assumption that if we were healthy it would be enough.

Props to the front office...
