http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wireta ... _splitter/Talks of a future lockout and the Spurs may not have enough cap to sign PF Tiago Splitter during the offseason. Is it possible the Spurs may lose out on him if the Spurs don't put forth some aggressive action to sign him to the roster?

I think if we offer him the full MLE we should have no problem bringing him over. Ownership dished out a lot of cash last summer to try and make us a contender I really don't see why they wouldn't do it this summer.

Thing is I honestly doubt the Spurs offer him the full MLE. Like any rookie bigs, he'll be foul prone and inconsistent. You'd hope that he's SO GOOD that he gets the starting job the minute he sets foot, but most likely he'd be in a role Blair is in right now for his first season.
The MLE is all we're armed with this offseason to add anyone and like I said, there will be plenty of very good FAs that can only get MLE from other teams. If championship is (once again) what we're aiming for, then we should be going after proven veteran players instead of rookie bigs.
Put it this way, we have MLE. Camby is available. Spliiter is available.
If you're going for a championship, you'd have to think we're better with Camby.
If you're going for building the future, then you go with Splitter.
But it's hard to say that we want to be a contender but then use our only asset on a rookie big when better players who are definite starters are still on the board

It was never going to happen anyway.

Bottom line spurs don't want to pay up. They always try to get players on the cheap...and well we are a small market team so I don't blame them.
Just trade away his rights to someone other than a division rival and not a 2nd round pick is all I ask.

Right. I know all these antics Mark Cuban does, but I sure do envy Mavs fans for having such an owner. I just think, if Mark Cuban is our owner and we get to spend whatever, we'll probably have a bunch of overpaid players on our roster. Nevertheless, we'll have a bunch of overpaid BUT talented players.

Maybe not the full MLE but you should give him around 4 mill $ just to match what he's earning right now in Vitoria, and he could get bigger offers from the likes of Real Madrid or Panathinaikos if he decided to commit for a long (4-5 years) contract.

I'll agree that I think it'll take more than his rookie salary contract to get Splitter here.
My question really is whether the Spurs will do it. A lot of things come in question here. Like for instance, the Spurs have never had a history of paying an unproven player big money. Someone please look up Manu's first contract with the Spurs. I have no idea how much it is but I'm pretty sure it's damn cheap. Plus, there's no way of knowing how his game translate here especially in his 1st year. Long term, maybe it's good to spend that money but I think if we go ahead and resign Manu, that means we're giving it one more shot at the ring. Using our only asset to sign a rookie international big man who will be inconsistent and foul prone isn't the way to go.
Whatever happens to Manu this summer will dictate what direction the Spurs FO is going. Manu resign and you have to think the Spurs go at it one more time. Manu leaving means the Spurs has given up and you can start looking for a fire sale and start rebuilding. That's where Splitter comes in.

Sign and trade with the Thunder is likely.

Bulls fan. Would you do this trade:
Deng, $4 million trade exception, 1st pick (assuming its Milwaukee's #17-20th)
for Jefferson and rights to Splitter?

"For example, a team with a $1 million Traded Player exception cannot combine it with their $2 million player to trade for a $3 million player (see question number 74 for more information on combining exceptions)."
Got that quote off the CBA Faq. You cannot combine your trade exception (4 mil) with a player (Deng) to match the salary to Jefferson.
I will say that I think Deng is a better fit offensively than Jefferson is. Deng is a deadly midrange shooter and I think Jefferson gets that a lot here in SA. It will all depend on how the situation plays our with Splitter. I think if there's something to be worked out to bring Splitter to SA, then it'll happen. If it gets to the point where it can't work out and we're trading him, then for me, this is definitely a deal worth looking at. However, if it got to that point, no one is going to offer us much for splitter knowing the situation. We'll have no leverage.

Plus Deng is younger.

the deng deal is interesting, but i think the spurs would probably pass. id bet they would sooner look to start breaking the team apart than add a salary commitment like deng. not the sexy route, but might be the more likely one.
the trade is legal though. the bulls arent combining a TPE with deng, one is being created by the bulls absorbing the difference between rj and dengs deals with their cap space.

You're right. I forgot they have cap space.

Neutral fan here, and I just wanted to compliment you for making an interesting and unbiased trade offer. Too often, we see homerish trades that diminish the usefulness of the RealGM forum, making it more of a time-waster. Your trade is the hidden gems that keep me coming back here.
I think ss1986v2 is being pretty realistic though, and I really like the additional cap space coming to the Spurs in the deal. I question whether San Antonio will even use their MLE, and it probably will depend on whether they can bring back Manu. However, Duncan's getting a bit long in the tooth, so that window is probably closing soon, and I think a deal upgrading Jefferson to Deng (and I'm not a fan of his contract), may be a possibility.
Anyway, I just wanted to compliment you on a very interesting deal.

I was just coming in here to ask if there was any word on Splitter coming over to play for the Spurs next year. So it seems like it's all about contract and money now right?

I think if the Spurs wasn't bound by the rookie contract and could offer Splitter as much as they want, he'd be here from the 1st day we draft him. So yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what is keeping him from coming so far.

I'm not sure what your board has been offered for Splitter so far, but if you are unable to sign Splitter to a contract, would you consider trading him for Nikola Pekovic or the #23 pick?

Yes i'll take the 23rd pick as long as its not coming from Houston.
