In the summer, Popovich convinced the owner that McDeyss was a piece necessary for the championship. Pop thought Ian wasn't any good.
It turns out that Ian is better than McDeyss and that McDeyss was a $9 million mistake (including luxury tax).
Pop's decision to get McDeyss was a $9 million mistake but if Pop doesn't play Ian, then maybe the $9 million mistake won't be obvious to everyone, especially the owner.
