Could there be a worse time for the Supes to absolutely suck? Imagine if the arena issue came up in the 90's when the Supes were rolling and eveyone was a fan. The M's and Hawks hadn't received new stadiums yet and the Supes were the talk of the town. Now, they finally go into full rebuild mode(which should have happened 3-4 years ago) and it couldn't come at a wose time. Public support couldn't be any lower. Give them 2-3 years and they will be one of the best young teams in the NBA and a factor in the playoffs but I am afraid it is looking more and more likely that it will be in another city. It makes me sick.
It is just incredibly frustrating that there should be a way to fund this arena but I think people with giant egos that are looking to make a statement are going to get in the way. Build a new god damn arena and keep the most successful franchise that this town has ever known in the area. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that they are setting up the franchise to be great in the future for many years. Build it so you can attract the best concerts and possibly host a final four game. Attract an NHL hockey team and give our city that much more variety. Who really gives a crap if we extend a tax that most people in the area will even notice to keep the Supes in town. Having the Supes in the area goes beyond going to the games and how much money the can bring to the area. I watch plenty of games at home with my son and even sometimes my wife and daughter. We talk about the good ole days of Kemp, Payton, Schrempf and Perkins and ponder what could be in the future. I was getting pumped up tonight just watching the highlights of Kemp in his heyday. It brought back so many good memories of hanging with my friends and cheering for the Supes at the local watering hole. My son is finally reaching an age where I can take him to the games and we can actually hav ea good time together there because he gets into them. He told me last game that the games are so much better because he is getting old enough to understand the game. It is hard to put a value on things like that but they should count as part of the equation. Sorry for the rant but I just had to go off for a minute as the reality that they may actually be leaving is starting to sink in.......
