Shaq to the Suns for Marion & Banks?

Post#1 » by djthesonicsfan » Wed Feb 6, 2008 3:45 am

This trade rumor is everywhere. All I can say is GREAT!!

Marion on the Heat means they can't tank any more games.

Shaq on the Suns means those draft picks they sent us for Kurt Thomas just got a lot more valuable.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3232862

Reports seem to indicate there's a good chance it will happen. But what's that old saying, "Don't believe anything that you hear and only half of what you see." I suppose there will be some sort of statement one way or the other tomorrow so we'll find out soon enough.

As for my logic, it goes like this...

The Miami Heat are going to win a lot of games after this trade. S Marion is that good. And M Banks has a perfect chance to finally get his career going. He's not horrible, way better than J Williams. And a PG & SF is exactly what the team needed. So here's the Heat's new lineup...

Starters - M Banks, D Wade, S Marion, U Haslem, M Blount
Rotation - R Davis, D Wright, D Cook, A Johnson

They're a decent backup big from being a good team. Bottom line - there's no chance they're going to lose the most games & steal D Rose in the 2008 draft.

As for Phoenix, I can't believe trading S Marion for S O'Neal is going to win them more games. Shaq is done. Maybe he wills himself into some super human effort for the rest of the year, but not next year. Or the year after. That 2010 Phoenix 1st round pick never looked so good.

That 2010 first rounder could be a top 3 pick.

I don't see how our pick gets better because of this, if Shaq stays healthy for the next 2 years the Suns are going to win a lot of games around the same as they are now. I honestly think we had a better shot at a higher pick if Marion bolted. Either way we'll be lucky to get it in the top 20. Bookmark this. :)

Either way why the hell did they give us KT if they are now prepared to eat the luxury. Very strange.

This is a dumb move for the Suns if this trade is real. It just made them a lot older...why would they give up on Shawn Marion? I remember reading rumors over the past two years about him wanting out, but I didn't know the Suns were that desperate to get rid of him.

Shaq has another two years at most left in him IMO. This trade might be one of the worst I've seen in the past few years. Maybe even one of the worst trades over the past 10 years.

my apologies dj, i just read the latest reports. what the hell is kerr thinking? this probably doesn't help the suns in the regular season but if shaq is healthy when the playoffs roll around, well that might be a different story. still, the risk they are taking is huge.

What makes it so that every white ex-guard in the NBA can be a GM?? Steve Kerr was a bad announcer and now he's a bad GM (IMHO).

Talk about selling your future for the present. No risk, no reward.

Given the Suns' lack of playoff success the last several years, something had to be done to change the dynamic. Trading for Shaq might be crazy enough to work.

They didn't really had a chance against the Spurs and (now)Lakers anyways. So why not trying something like this? Some sources als say that Marion wasn't all that much regarded in their locker room and he'll also ask for a nice extension/contract next summer at the latest.

BTW: That unprotected 2010 1st round pick, we got in that Thomas deal, from the Suns sure looks better and better to us.

Having Marion with Wade on the Heat might just mean that they pass us in the standings, which gives us a better chance at drafting the point guard we want. The two other teams with worse records than us are Memphis and Minnesota, and neither would seem to be looking for a point. Unless they turn around and flip Marion to a contender.

Interesting idea. But S Marion is an expiring if you believe he's going to opt out. (One more year if he doesn't.) Why would Miami trade an expiring? Unless, of course, you can get back other expirings along with picks/prospects? Of the top of my head I don't know who that would be...

Other than Yao, no center in the West matches up well with Shaq and he knows how to win important games.

I came to say exactly what djthesonicsfan said at the start of this thread: for now, this seems to be a lopsided trade that makes Miami better and Phoenix worse, which is doubly beneficial to the Sonics. Maybe I'll be proven wrong and the corpse of Shaq will turn out to be better for Phoenix than Marion, but I doubt it. And since Shaq is now heading towards his "Ewing with the Sonics" years, I'm really liking what this means for 2010.

Yup, first thing I thought when I heard about this trade was that our 2010 draft pick just became a lottery pick and our 2008 pick probably became a few spots better. Maybe Shaq will help them in the playoffs where the game slows down, if he is healthy enough to play. I think that what Marion brings to the table is being underestimated. He is the most versatile player on that team and probably the best defender. He also averages more boards than Shaq and can start the break, not just outlet the ball after he gets the board. As much as Shaq has declined the past couple years imagine him with 2 more years of wear and tear.

the suns may drop off in 2010 but not this year. not as long as nash is there. remember when amare went down for a year? that team was still very, very good in the regular season. losing marion hurts on D but hill and diaw should be able to pick up most of the slack on the offensive end. i am also betting that shaqs "injuries" miraculously heal up real quick. as far as this years pick, it might improve slightly, but i wouldnt count on it. the heat however should certainly improve.

I agree. Sounds like Shaq is raring to go.

Maybe... it might depend on how much time they need to spend evaluating Marcus Banks.
