Non Supersonics residents/fans thread

Post#1 » by UNC Tar Heel Fan » Mon Apr 14, 2008 10:16 pm

I hope this fits on your board, but I just wanted to give an outsider's point of view.

I wouldn't say I'm a non fan, I just follow the Sonics and I do not live in Seattle. It is going to be a sad day if you do lose your team. My best memory of the Sonics was the 90's era with Kemp and Payton. The 96 finals was something to behold because Kemp was dominating that series. It looked like my Bulls were gonna sweep you guys but the crowd and homecourt made it a closer series winning the next two in a row. If this team ceases to exist in Seatlle, I will always have the DVD's to remember this series.

I hope this can be a good thread for non-Seatlle residents or fans to give their memories of your team. If it doesn't fit the board, just merge wherever it belongs.

Here's hoping for the best Sonic fans!

i was born in vancouver (before the grizzlies) but grew up in seattle. i left seattle in '01 when i graduated and have been living all over the country since. one of my stops was actually oklahoma city in '03. the situation with the sonics notwithstanding, i think people are getting the wrong impression of okies. they are nice people and okc is a good town.

THAT said, i've followed the sonics/mariners/hawks/uw all my life, everywhere i've gone. i really have no more roots in seattle but i visit from time to time and i still wouldn't be able to come to grips with the sonics leaving. i spread the word of SOS and the sonics situation everywhere i go these days, to the best of my abilities. most nba fans seem to be uneducated about the situation..

anyway, i don't really post here often anymore, but i do my best to get the word out when i can and support the sonics in other ways. there are actually lots of sonics fans living in other parts of the country believe it or not.

My favorite memory is after my Blazers won it all, we had a record of 50-10 Walton went down and we tried to hold on the rest of the year. In the first round of the playoffs we face this up and coming Seattle team 1st quarter of the first game we reel off 40 and Blazermania is alive and well. Little did we know that was it for our run in history and Seattle's was to begin. The Sonics went to the Championship series that year and played a very tough Washington Bullet team. It was a great series as a matter of fact two years in a row the Bullets and Sonics went 7 games with both getting a ring. Great basketball and great memories. You can't replace these memories Bennett and Stearn with po-dunk Oky-city! PS- might have been Baltimore Bullets it was a long time ago.

As a Jazz fan, it pisses me off to think that Seattle and its great fans could lose the Sonics. The battles between the Jazz and Sonics over the years have been great. I have attended many games in Key Arena, and the fans were always vocal, but civil.

Hopefully, there is an 11th hour save and your city can continue to have (and support) the Sonics, and there can be years of continued rivalry.

Timberwolves fan here from okc that in no way is in support of the heist they are trying to pull on you guys. Even if there is something I would gain by this (two more wolves games a year) its a shame that this is how they are going about it.I hope the efforts you are putting in to it pay off. I really don't need to be surrounded by sonics fans, sooner fans are bad enough.

Bulls fan here.

I have a question about the current situation and everything thats going on. The previous owner(not the current one), didn't he try to get an arena deal and what not, but the city was playing hardball with him in which he eventually gave up and sold the team to the OKC investor?

Now that the team is sold, and it's looking as if the team will really move, the City started to panic and this season JUST started offering Arena deals...

If thats the case, why do you guys blame the old/starbucks company owner and not the City?

Sonics fan from Canada. My earliest SUPERsonics memories were as a kid watching King tv, enjoying players like Slick Watts, Gus Williams, Spencer Haywood, and of course "Downtown" Freddy Brown. I got hooked early on Supersonics basketball.

As for where to lay the blame, I think a year from now reality will set in ( whether the team is still in Seattle or not) and objectively people will realize that there's dirty hands all around and that the big players in all this, meaning Howard Schultz, Clay Bennett, David Stern, the city of Seattle, and the Washington state legislature all let down the fans of the NBA team.

Not one power player has stepped up to the plate in a big way to save the team and keep it where it belongs. But all of them will be pointing fingers at the other guy. It's shameful all around and only the Joe Average fans have risen to the occasion and done their part ( going above and beyond) in attempting to save what is dear to their hearts.

Despite whatever they may say the rest only have dollars as their interest, not the passion for the team with the 40 year history.
