6/26 - Draft Day Thread

Post#1 » by yearsago » Thu Jun 26, 2008 3:04 pm

If someone wants to close this up, thats fine by me.

Interesting news this morning from the Miami camp:

The Miami Heat are reportedly now considering taking either O.J. Mayo or Jerryd Bayless with the second overall pick, according to The South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

The Heat worked out both Mayo and Bayless on Tuesday, according to report on ESPN.com.

There has been continual speculation that Miami is considering passing on Michael Beasley, despite his status as a consensus top-two prospect.

If they are equally sold on bayless, as they are on mayo, then we could still make the trade for beasley, despite what Minnesota does.

If beasley drops to minnesota, I would think they would try to drop out of that pick (if they are in love with love).

Either way, I hope seattle's phones are on speed dial to both miami and minnesota.

I wan't beasley here.

KJR had someone on from Minnesota, He said, that if Beasley falls to Minnesota, that Minnesota will just take Beasley and be done with it.

I'm not sure if this is the place to post this, but I will post it here anyway. I'm not much of a Sonics fan (although I do like a few of your players), so I don't know a great deal about the team. I was just browsing nbadraft.net and noticed that they have Brook Lopez going to Seattle. Now I'm no expert on the roster, but I would have thought that with the amount of centers you guys have drafted in recent years that you wouldn't be interested in Lopez. I know Lopez would probably be an upgrade over the guys you have now, but I thought you would be more likely to look at adding a guard or something like that. Am I wrong?

Yes, you're pretty much wrong.

We've got Robert Swift, Mo Sene and Johan Petro as centers, while Nick Collison can play some minutes there as well.
Though, no one knows if Swift, who's a RFA, will be able to come back from yet another knee injury he suffered last season and Mo Sene is done for the year with a knee injury as well. That leaves us with Petro, who's more of a pf/c combo player and that's surely not enough for a full season, if you want to win more then 20 games or so.

Also, we've got Kevin Durant playing sg for us and the positions we need the most improvement are Point Guard and Center.

So Mayo, Bayless, Westbrook and B. Lopez should be the guys on our list, if we're staying at #4. Though, if Beasley somehow slips to #4 then we of course would take him and run.

@yearsago:
Yes, if the Heat really like Bayless just as much as Mayo, then i could see us having a shot at trading up to #2. But somehow i don't believe any of those rumors and i expect Riley/the Heat to stay at #2 and select Beasley.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of their injuries. All I knew was that you had about 3 young centers who had some potential. As for the SG position, isn't Durant expected to become a SF for the majority of his career?

I dont know if anyone saw the draft special a couple days ago, but they had a day cameras with Beasley during a lottery party. He said he didnt want to go to Minnesota, he didnt use those exact words but I got the feeling that he would hate going there.

I guess it will be interesting to see if the Wolves play hard-ball with Beasley and draft him anyway. However, I fully expect him to go at #2.

I think nearly everyone expects Durant to slide over to sf sometime in the future, but PJ Carlesimo already stated that he wants to play Durant at sg again. So we're not that much in need for a sg and i don't think we'll go for one with our own pick this year.

Didn't someone post that when Seattle got th #4, pick, that Beasley was obviouslly upset by that? I think he really wants to play with his friend.

I'd like to see the Sonics skip on Lopez. Mostly because I'd like to see Swift make a recovery and see Johan Petro keep developing, the kid is only 22.

But if both Swift and Sene look to be toast then I really couldn't fault Presti for taking Lopez but I would hate to see the Sonics use the #4 pick on him. But does he fill a need? Yes.

If they do draft Lopez I have a feeling the Sonics will be the team with the 5th worst record in the league next year instead of the team with the 2nd worst record in the league. Which they should a decent shot at a PG next year.

I have a feeling Presti is going to be moving lots of pieces this draft. So who knows what the team is going to look like next season? Wilcox, Wilkins Watson, Luke, Collison, Petro heck I could see Presti move anyone except Durant today, even Green if the price was right.

^^ I wouldn't expect to see Green moved (I'd be fairly shocked). Yes, he could be moved for the right price. However, I think he's worth more to the Sonics than what his fair market value is currently worth.

If the Sonics somehow manage to land Beasley I could see Presti moving Green to land a PG.

In the past I thought a Beasley, Green, Durant trio could co exists. Since all the measurements have come out I don't see Beasley playing PF in the league. I view him as a SF. I really, really think Green and Beasley would be redundant.

That being said next to Durant I think green is the least like to be moved but you never know.

Just say no to Lopez. Please.

As for Beasley, wow. Who knows. That's a risk.

At the end of the day I still prefer OJ Mayo & Jerryd Bayless in that order. And I think there's a real chance OJ Mayo falls to us at #4. We'll see.

I have a feeling that might happen. They both have huge man crushes on each other.

What PG do you think you could land with Green? I can't think of a point guard that would be worth trading Green for (that we could realistically get for Green).

Also, I don't see them being redundant necessarily.

Green (3/4), Durant (2/3), and Beasley (3/4) are all pretty versatile and I think you could almost just throw them out onto the floor and let them pick who they want to guard. Goes along the same line of thinking as the Durant/Green/Lewis line up that was briefly thought of as a possibility last year (just younger and arguably more talented).

I might take Mayo over Beasley, but I'd take Beasley over Bayless.
