PF Barrett aka Point Five Barrett

Post#1 » by djsunyc » Fri Jan 12, 2024 1:22 am

what's different about rj barrett?

he's playing nothing but darko's point five basketball. look at the these highlights. there is zero dribbling around aimlessly. there is zero bad MR jumpers. he's making super quick reads and everything is done with a purpose.

he's doing the following:

1. transition attacking the basket
2. catch and attack the basket in the halfcourt
3. catch and immediately shoot the 3

and he's also moving the ball on those attacks. the pace has unleashed something. darko ball has transformed him vs. the iso-heavy knicks. even when the 3 % drops, the other things are totally sustainable.

He’s been great but he’s also been hot so let’s see how it goes. What I said at the time of the trade is he cares about playing for us, he’s a dog and that is what this team needed. The quicker ball movement, pace definitely seem to help him though.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

He is known to run very hot and even colder. He is a home town kid playing for his favourite team growing up. That's a massive motivation factor. OG basically got us our back court of the future.

Looks like poor-man version (still a complement) of young/slimmer Carmelo Anthony with power and smoothness from a wing

Aside from his playing....he also seems to have huge potential on team culture. By all accounts, his work ethic and professionalism is respected by vets around the league. His on-court demeanor and maturity are self-evident. We needed someone like this. Especially at his age. It bodes well even if his actual stats normalize.

He's bound to have games where he goes 3/9, 0/2 from 3 with a line like 10/2/2. There will probably even be a stretch of games like that. We'll see how quickly the board turns on him then lol.

That being said, he's been amazing so far, well beyond even the highest of expectations post-trade.

If his shooting (not this hot) sticks, it'll be a huge win for us. We've seen a sample when he was shooting lights out pre injury for Knicks.

Right, but he has shown a lot of skills and athletic abilities to see a high ceiling (higher than OG)

He was draped all over Paul George on several possessions that PG had to pass it instead of taking it to RJ. That's OG level defense

A major difference that I've seen discussed on here is that as a Raptor, RJ is playing the 2, as opposed to the 3 he played on the Knicks. Similar to the 6' 7" DeMar, he has a size - or at least girth advantage against opposing 2s, that doesn't work against 3s. So bully ball is always an option, which may make him more wide open in his outside shooting.

It didn't seem to hurt us against the Clippers, but that's why I hope we don't see too much of this two point guard lineup. Keep RJ at the 2.

That's the remarkable thing about this trade. RJ is playing like OG wishes he could play. I'm not gonna argue yet that RJ at 23 is a better overall player than OG at 27. But if their differences in offensive and defensive capabilities basically cancel each other out at this stage, then we basically got IQ for free (Precious and Malachi got us the Pistons' second rounder  ).

I love barret, shifting him to the 2 is just perfect. He physically overmatches opposing 2s, love that he attacks the rim relentlessly.

King Street Barrett is playing in a system that allows him to be more assertive and efficient. He's way faster that I thought.

He's also passing a lot more. Knicks fans were telling us he's a more highly paid Achiuwa.

Rj is a better player for our system than OG was through the first 6 games, that's certain.

OG's a great player, but he's a guy you add to make a contender, not a guy you build around.
