Well it really depends on what criteria you are using to rank him doesn't it? The team obviously has a lot more data and metrics than we do so I'd be inclined to trust their assessment.

Based on the data we have, however, the fact Poeltl gives up only 0.91/0.92 points per possession in the P&R when the average possession is worth 1.1 points clearly suggests he is an elite P&R defender. This data also suggests he is top 5.

But is possessions really the best way to rank players? Shouldn't frequency be considered? For instance, your data on pnr ball-handlers omits Bam (8.2 possessions, 0.87ppp). But when we look at frequency for pnr ball-handler possessions defended Poeltl is at 60.8% and Bam is at 59.5%. Pretty similar in regards to how often they are defending pnr ball handlers. Would you rather have Bam guarding the ball-handler or Poeltl? I think the answer is clearly Bam given his elite mobility as a big.

Based on total possessions/frequency it's seems far more valuable to have someone who is better at defending the ball-handler considering those type of possessions happen at about 9:1 ratio. I think every team would choose Bam over Poeltl as a pnr defender but based on your cut-off he gets left out completely when comparing him to Poeltl. Bam is elite at defending smaller players and that's who is soaking up the highest frequency of pnr possessions.

For whatever reason these posts to prove how good Poeltl is always end up leaving out half of the other C's in the league.

I used 9 as a cutoff simply because that was Poeltl's average. Obviously you need to interpret things in consideration of arbitrary cutoffs. The threshold before you starting getting non-centres seems to be 7.

You can of course use frequency and thank you for pointing that out because there is actually something quite interesting about frequency! If we use a possession threshold of 7 to keep it to centres, the lowest frequency is 50%. What is interesting is that it seems like 60% is a threshold where below 60% you have smaller and/or more athletic centres (e.g., Bam, Claxton, Holmgren, Jarrett Allen) while above 60% you get your bigger more traditional centres. I don't know if this pattern is consistent with other seasons but it would be interesting if it were.

Anyway, using this single metric to try and rank players is impossible and inappropriate but we are just using with the data we have.

this is why the yak injury killed us - since jan 1 in the 4 games he played:

yak on court: 123.3 ortg, 113.2 drtg, +10 net (#1 on the team)
yak off court: 121.1 ortg, 129.9 drtg, -8.8 net (#2 on the team)

look at the defensive drop when he sits. it's not been mentioned but this is where the koloko illness hurt us.
