I'm generally anti-tank but we are 16-30 and have a chance to get a top 5 pick. Let's go for it.
Do we have a realistic chance at? Detroit, Charlotte, Spurs and Washington have the bottom 4 on lock. The "best" we can be is 5 (in a battle with the blazers and Grizzlies). If end up 5th or 6th and suppose someone jumps us in the lottery and pushes us to 7th?
The team is so bad that we may ending getting that low regardless of what we do but i don't think we should go out of our way to tank.
The reason why we shouldn't tank is like you just said, bottom 5 is not realistic especially when guys come back from injury. Even if you have the 6th best odds, there is still a good chance the lottery luck will make you give up the pick anyway. The worse part about tanking is wasting the opportunity of having Scottie get real meaningful reps as a #1 for the first time trying to win games playing alongside IQ/RJ/Dick. A Play-In game with those 4 along side Yak will do wonders for their development going into next year. The front office and coaches can see what they need to work on in the summer and what to add to the current core 4. You want to change the culture then don't build bad habits like the Hornets/Wizards/Pistons have been doing. Play hard, try to win and see where the chips fall at the end of the year. If we keep losing at a high rate cause of injuries then so be it. Lastly if you convey the pick this year at least you have all your 1st round picks going forward instead of owing the Spurs next years 1st with protections and we are doing this all over again in a better draft when there is no guarantee we will be good. We have 2 1st round picks in this years draft and the Pistons 31st pick because of the trades so do we really need to try and go for a 4th? Compared to next year when our only pick in a better draft will be our own that could very easily be in the lottery. Again conveying the pick this year means pick flexibility going forward meaning you can now trade picks for a player instead of being in limbo again.
No one is saying losing on purpose. We are saying to focus on development and give repetitions to young players without having the WIN as the ultimate goal. You try to win but in the caveat of developing.
Winning is not the ultimate single key performance indicator
Our goal should not be to trade our 2025 pick.
Next year, it’s arguably even easier than this season to have a top6 pick as we would be without O.G/Siakam for the full year and maybe others teams take a jump (like houston did this year).
At the end of the day, there is argument for both options. That is why the organization will welcome any outcome and will act as if it was the preferred option all along.
Obviously if the keep convey, it will be nice to not having this cloud next season. On the other end, I don’t care which draft, any time you can draft a player top6 , you have an amazing opportunity .
