Upcoming Canadian prospects?

Post#1 » by Public_Enemy101 » Sat Feb 10, 2024 5:35 pm

Haven’t kept up with this since RJ was drafted so yeah...

Do we have any Canadian players that are expected to draft high within the next few years? Or another big prospect like Wiggins, even though we know how that turned out

I only know of Zach Edey from Purdue and he isn’t technically a top 10 pick.

There are always a few good threads on here about the Canadian b-ball players. The general "Team Canada Basketball" thread is a good place to start.

But also, the poster "Hair Canada" every fall creates lists with great info and insight into Canadian prospects at the various age groups. I'd highly recommend those.

But just quickly, there aren't any sure fire future high draft picks in the next few years. Aside from Edey, a few of the better Canadian NCAA players this year have been:

Xaivian Lee (So), SG, Princeton - He's really taken a big leap, but playing in the Ivy League doesn't often lead draft success
Vasean Allette (Fr), SG, Old Dominion* - He was having a good freshman year, but got dismissed from the team for conduct violations
Ryan Nembhard (Jr.), PG, Gonzaga - Has had a bad shooting year as Gonzaga's PG, and the team has underperformed
Jahmyl Telford (Sr), SF, Butler - He's been a pleasant surprise and possibly Butler's best player this season

But as you can probably guess, all of those guys would be longshots to be drafted, and definitely no 1st rounders this year.

Looking more into the future, there are some interesting younger prospects, but it's hard to definitively say how they'll develop.

Christian Nitu, PF - committed to Indiana State for next season

Jaion Pitt, Efeosa Oliugu, Will Riley, and Spencer Ahrens are all interesting in the HS class of 2025

The best overall prospect might be Paul Osaruyi from the HS class of 2027, but that's a long way away to project. A lot of people though Elijah Fisher was going to be a great prospect at that age too.

Hope this gives you a quick introduction - but definitely check out Hair Canada's threads for better insight.

Really appreciate the info, thanks. I’ll check out the treads you mentioned as well. I’m excited about the future of Canadian basketball!
