Wonder how much tickets will cost? Hoping it will actually be affordable to take the kids.

Would almost defeat the purpose if it wasn't.

If they want to carve out a lane outside of the Leafs and Raptors, they should keep ticket costs low. Wasn't too long ago seeing a Raptors game could be a fun spur of the moment thing due to decent pricing. The team won't be owned by MLSE so that might be a good sign in that regard.

Not surprising because it’s consistent with previous WNBA expansion but Teresa Resch pretty much confirm that the team would NOT be eligible for #1 pick on year 1.

But she also said that rules are still to be determined. They will try to influence the process for the new GS team

That sucks. Didn't know they did that. Still better than the raw deal the raptors and grizzlies got from the NBA though i auppose

Yeah, as I've said before on this board, I was a Raps seasons ticket holder for 13 or so years. I just cancelled for next season because the cost has gone up outrageously. I just signed up for the waitlist for the WNBA tickets, on the assumption that the price for seasons will be reasonable. But if it's not, I'll forego the $200 deposit.

There should 20 home games, so ideally the seasons price for a pair of tickets will be, I dunno, $1200? An average of $30 per ticket per game.

[edit] On further investigation, it's likely that the tickets would average $50 Canadian each, at least. So seasons would cost $2,000.

That’s ok. The 2026 draft looks pretty weak. I saw a mock that had the female version of big country rated #1 (Beers from Oklahoma via Oregon State).

It’ll be tank for Juju in the first season for sure.

What would be the reasons ? (Just curious)

That Canada was a part of a Monarchy (British rule) until its independence and is now part of the commonwealth. It also denotes power, royalty and rule. Plus, I believe Monarch butterflies breed in Canada, especially in Southern Ontario.

Monarchs was the name of the now defunct Sacramento team so not sure they reuse it.

For real. Ok, yeah scrub that idea lol

Toronto’s WNBA team will be privately funded by Tanenbaum’s holding company, Kilmer Sports Ventures, and not by Canadian sports giant MLSE – which is jointly owned by BCE (parent company of TSN) and Rogers Communications. The franchise will reportedly require an investment north of $100 million, including the $50 million expansion fee. And while a group of limited partners are expected to be unveiled in the coming months, Tanenbaum will pick up most of the bill himself.

$ 50m ex. fee was honoured

She wasn’t sharing numbers, but league commissioner Cathy Engelbert said the expansion fee for Toronto was the largest in league history. The Golden State Valkyries, who are set to debut as the league’s 13th team in 2025, paid a $50 million fee. The Associated Press reported Tanenbaum will pay $115 million, although that figure represents an all-in investment and not just an expansion fee.

I was pumped watching that PC despite not living in Toronto and Canada anymore. Anything that is beneficial to the city is fine by me.

One thing we can all be sure of, this yet-to-exist team will win a title before the Leafs do lol.

9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Serious question - if American NBA stars don't want to come to Toronto, why do we think WNBA players getting paid barely above minimum wage would want to come to Toronto to get fisted by taxes, compared to say Florida? The CRA is straight up taking Tavares to court over unpaid taxes on a signing bonus lol.

Yeah depending on the State. But then you have the added 'bonus' of having to go through customs every time you travel; which...thank God Caitlin Clark fought for chartered flights because imagine flying Air Canada through Pearson every other day lol.

Honestly surprised WNBA does not attack markets that don't have NBA teams and try and just get a local thing going.

Like why not try like San Diego? It seems to me it is not surprising their two most profitable/valued teams are the ones where no NBA team is.
Why not go to like Nashville, Austin, Balitmore, etc.
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.
