Listened to Paul George and Zach Randolph share how Kevin Pritchard lied to both their faces right before trading them  Paul added that he now accepts it's a part of the business, but admitted it does cause players to talk and it impacts the reputation of the GM. I think DeMar shares how he feels because players are more open about this stuff now, and we listen because we talk about basketball a lot.

i never understood this way of thinking. because he’s wealthy doesn’t mean he does not have feelings. if you won the lottery would tomorrow couldn’t you still afforded sympathy if you were treated poorly in some way. he’s no less human because of his bank account.

I think because everything worked out perfectly, in terms of the chip, it looks like the obvious reason they made all the deals. All the focus went there. And Masai got all the credit for being bold, and taking a huge chance at a one year run, but really, it was done with the intention of also clearing room for a run at Giannis, if he became available.

Again, if Kawhi and Gasol had 4 years left or if Kawhi wanted to re-sign they would not have said "nah, we want Giannis later on". That is just crazy revisionist history and NO ONE was saying that was the reason for the trades. If Kawhi did not report and we ended up clearing a bunch of cap then sure, that was a nice consolation prize and worth the risk, but the 2022 FA class or whenever Giannis was possibly available was not why those deals happened.

If we did not win the championship then we made 2 win now moves that did not work out. We did not send out a lottery pick (Poeltl), a first rounder (to SA), Delon (young-ish player), JV (26 year old), Demar (28 year old all-star), and a second rounder (to MEM) just so we could someday MAYBE sign Giannis. That is mental gymnastics to suggest.

If we wanted Giannis, we could have kept Demar and sent him to MIL in a sign and trade if Giannis wanted to come here. There would have been zero need to gut our roster years in advance for a small % chance of signing him.

That is why the Kawhi deal was so perfect for Masai in the timing of it. It was a 99% forgone conclusion Kawhi was not going to re-sign, so trading DD for him meant it was not Masai refusing to reup DD to a long term extension, but rather Kawhi walking away from the team to free up the room. The only way they would probably have got Giannis was by signing him outright as a FA, which they needed the salary cap room. If they had DD on a contract, they would have then relied on Bucks willing to make a deal.

Yak, Delon & JV all required new deals before the summer of Giannis, and they would have required multi-year deals. Masai essentially determined the core he could retain financially around Giannis, if he were able to sign Giannis (that core being Pascal, FVV & OG), and then moved the others in the one year pursuit of the championship.

The rest came down to fate. Raps go on a magical run and win the championship. But likewise, the Bucks manage to go on a run the following year and also win, which takes Giannis off the market, as he resigns.

Your version is very possible. But it's also possible that it took half a decade for masai to finally realized the team will never go anywhere with a mediocre combo like derozan and Lowry at the helm and he just gave up on derozan at the right time.
An opportunity just fell into his lap due to Bobbys connection. It's not like he's Brad Stevens or Pat Reily who clearly understands winning better on a strategic or instinctive level.
Masai's not a mastermind, just a lucky guy with a knack for marketing himself. He has done a great job for what he has though.

I think Masai knew the most likely path to a Finals is by acquiring a superstar (and DD wasn't it), and Giannis was in his sights because of their past connections. Kawhi demanding a trade just fell into Masai's lap in terms of the perfect deal to make to unload DD's contract, and give the team a superstar for a one year run at a chip. They got lucky too, because Kawhi had to prove he was still at that level to not only command the contract he was looking for in LA, but also have control (i.e. LAC trading their future for what Kawhi wanted). So Raps got one of the last great seasons out of Kawhi.

It also helped that Pop probably wanted to send Kawhi to the furthest destination from LA, and that gave Masai more leverage in the trade, where he didn't need to include Pascal or OG.

So yes, a lot of luck around a strategy to acquire a superstar, but the original target never happened.

Yeah spurs trading him to raptors make a lot of sense in addition to spite. Look no further than bucks being a running joke for trading Holiday which leads to a gift wrapped Boston championship. And they didn't even trade him to the same conference.

Oh **** off with this

Masai is in that tier. He has as many rings (well, more right now) as Brad Stevens who inherited a contender
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

Has Riley even won a championship without having to go out and pay for one? Stevens has done a great job but it’s a lot easier to build a team when the team has already been built.

We don’t know if Masai is a mastermind but we do know his team has been among the best if not the best drafting team over the past 10 years. You can’t call it luck when every pick hit for half a decade. Then he goes out and drafts the ROTY.

Eh, let him have his eternal grievance. I sleep better at night knowing that we won a championship. It was worth trading him away for that.

Nothing to do with anything I said. Just my take on the fact he's also been blessed more then he shoulda been in life, which is ultimately what also led to this moment,

He metaphorically lost his girl and had to watch her getting smashed harder then ever on live TV with a new guy... Of course he felt like chit.

In the bigger picture he has nothing to be ashamed of, so why would he or I feel bad? He worked his tail off and has had a great career playing in a role well above his ceiling and being paid very well for it. Seems he's like he's moved on well, as he should.

What’s crazy is where he is now skill-wise compared to when we drafted him. Some of us placed Sonny Weems above him. He’s just gotten better every year in comparison to so many of the bums in this league who never improve.
