That is just crazy revisionist history and NO ONE was saying that was the reason for the trades. If Kawhi did not report and we ended up clearing a bunch of cap then sure, that was a nice consolation prize and worth the risk, but the 2022 FA class or whenever Giannis was possibly available was not why those deals happened.
If we did not win the championship then we made 2 win now moves that did not work out. We did not send out a lottery pick (Poeltl), a first rounder (to SA), Delon (young-ish player), JV (26 year old), Demar (28 year old all-star), and a second rounder (to MEM) just so we could someday MAYBE sign Giannis. That is mental gymnastics to suggest.
If we wanted Giannis, we could have kept Demar and sent him to MIL in a sign and trade if Giannis wanted to come here. There would have been zero need to gut our roster years in advance for a small % chance of signing him.
That is why the Kawhi deal was so perfect for Masai in the timing of it. It was a 99% forgone conclusion Kawhi was not going to re-sign, so trading DD for him meant it was not Masai refusing to reup DD to a long term extension, but rather Kawhi walking away from the team to free up the room. The only way they would probably have got Giannis was by signing him outright as a FA, which they needed the salary cap room. If they had DD on a contract, they would have then relied on Bucks willing to make a deal.
Yak, Delon & JV all required new deals before the summer of Giannis, and they would have required multi-year deals. Masai essentially determined the core he could retain financially around Giannis, if he were able to sign Giannis (that core being Pascal, FVV & OG), and then moved the others in the one year pursuit of the championship.
The rest came down to fate. Raps go on a magical run and win the championship. But likewise, the Bucks manage to go on a run the following year and also win, which takes Giannis off the market, as he resigns.
Your version is very possible. But it's also possible that it took half a decade for masai to finally realized the team will never go anywhere with a mediocre combo like derozan and Lowry at the helm and he just gave up on derozan at the right time.
An opportunity just fell into his lap due to Bobbys connection. It's not like he's Brad Stevens or Pat Reily who clearly understands winning better on a strategic or instinctive level.
Masai's not a mastermind, just a lucky guy with a knack for marketing himself. He has done a great job for what he has though.
I think Masai knew the most likely path to a Finals is by acquiring a superstar (and DD wasn't it), and Giannis was in his sights because of their past connections. Kawhi demanding a trade just fell into Masai's lap in terms of the perfect deal to make to unload DD's contract, and give the team a superstar for a one year run at a chip. They got lucky too, because Kawhi had to prove he was still at that level to not only command the contract he was looking for in LA, but also have control (i.e. LAC trading their future for what Kawhi wanted). So Raps got one of the last great seasons out of Kawhi.
It also helped that Pop probably wanted to send Kawhi to the furthest destination from LA, and that gave Masai more leverage in the trade, where he didn't need to include Pascal or OG.
So yes, a lot of luck around a strategy to acquire a superstar, but the original target never happened.
