I love what Masai and Bobby are doing. This is honestly their own version of money ball. They have clearly found a in-balance in the league. When you think about a player in terms of offence and defence from a scale of 1-10. What you will realize is that finding 7/8 level offensive players is quite easy and abundant. Guys like Trent, Hardaway Jr., Malik are good example of 7s in offence. Question is on the flip side they are like 4 or 5s on defense. Even take RJ, he is maybe a 7.5/8 on offense cause of his ability to pass and rebound. But on defence he is like a 5 average or slightly below average. Then you got guys like Shead who is a 6 on offence but like an 8 on defence with potential to be a 9.
This is the math game Masai and Bobby are playing. Also explains why guys like Bridges, Bane, Caruso or even Jrue previously are landing such big hauls. Derrick White’s value in my mind is no less than KD or Jaylen Brown for the same reason.
The imbalance and flawed thinking in the league is that offense is overvalued. A guy who can put up 20 ppg is instantly viewed more favorable. But from a numbers perspective they don’t. If you want to acquire a Derozan, Lavine, Beal, Trae Young the cost honestly is not that high.
What Masai and Bobby are doing are acquiring guys with high defensive floors, but potential to improve on the offensive side.
Scottie
Mogbo
Jakob
Chomche
Walter
Shead
CMB
Martin
These guys can all be 8s on defense with some having the potential to become a 9. Now the question is can you get their offence to a 7 or even 8. Some will have that potential some won’t.
Scottie I think can get to a 9 D and 8 O
Jakob is like a 8.5 D and 7 O
The fact is we are loading up guys that can have a net score of 15-17.
Versus going after guys who are 8 on O and 4/5 on D.
When you extrapolate that across a team of 8-9 guys that’s the formula for winning basketball.
OKC was proof.
SGA - 9 O and 8 - D
Will - 8 O and 8 D
Chet - 7.5 O and 7.5 D
Hartenstein - 6 O and 8 D
Caruso - 7 - O and 9 - D
Wallace - 7-O and 8.5 - D
Dort - 7-O and 8 - D
Versus Denver
Jokic - 10 - O and 7- D
Murray - 8-O and 6 - D
MPJ - 8 -O and 6.5 D
Bruan - 7.5 - O and 7.5 D
Gordon - 7.5 - O and 8 D
Westbrook - 7 -O and 7.5 D
Peyton - 6- 0 and 7.5 D

League trending towards more shooting and offensive skills
Masai zagging towards more defense
It will be interesting to watch, again, but this time we have a real C

Not buying this
1) Masai's vision 6'9" didn't pan out
2) League trends offense because it sells ratings, refs will always bias offense over defense.
3) 2019 championship team was top 5 offensive team
