The league has had a few issues with scorekeeping in a pretty brief span of late. The Mavs were also cheated by the scorekeepers against the Pacers earlier this season. Now the Hawks have made mistakes twice and I expect the league will start taking matters a bit more seriously if they continue happening so frequently.
Bucket! Bucket!
What about this

What about this
Now, in this case, Miami and Atlanta still have another game to play. But what if it was the last meeting between two teams? What would the NBA do? Give them a rematch NEXT season? Obviously they can't, since the team in question's current season would be screwed.
So how would the NBA go about fixing that?

Why doesn't the NBA have its own official scorekeepers instead of the home team employing them? Things that are neutral like officiating is done by the League, why not scorekeeping as well? Its kind of risky to have one side supplying it, this could open up the door to more problems and allegations of cheating in the future, and an overall perception of bias in the scorekeeping... I know nobody trusts ATL anymore, teams will probably watch things closely when they're playing there...

Will they introduce the starting lineups twice?
What about the fans who attended the first game? Should they not get free tickets to see the last 59 seconds of the game they paid to see? Will those fans who paid to see the first game have to leave after 59 seconds to let in the paid customers for the second game?
Keep in mind Americans will sue over almost anything.

Those stats do not count and the game is being reset to 51-seconds, or whatever time was remaining in the game.
Check out the december 19th scoreboard and you'll see that the game is frozen at that point.

The main reason for a "do over" game now and not when we played is simple. There wasn't a huge referee scandal prior to our unfair loss. So, just to quiet the media and fans from claiming "omg nba is rigged!", Stern understands it's much smarter to allow them to play again in order to clean the NBA's image, showing that they do not endorse cheating.
