Can we just do what we did with Hopla last year and hire this Newell as a full time advisor? That'd be nice.

I'm not so sure he would be the best choice. Remember that Willis had unusually short arms, so he may do things differently to compensate for this limitation in the post, that might not be necessary for AB.

I dunno. I think Willis would be a great instructor on how to defend the interior and on how to establish good post position.

He didn't come here when he was contractually obliged to; why would he come here on his free will?

Change of heart? ....change of kidney, yes. Heart, probably no.

Mitchell did suggest they might send Bargs to a big man's camp this summer, the one run by the legendary Pete Newell, I imagine, so he can learn the intricacies of being an NBA centre.

I just can't believe that the Raptors organization would not fork money for a big man assistant to help Bargnani during the season. There is so much invested in this guy, it's the least they could do.

Good news. Pete Newell is considered THE prominent big man coach around. But I'm pretty sure that you cannot hire him to be a personal assistant to Bargs right now. The only option with Newell is to attend him big man camps in the summer.

My guess is that the Raps woudl have loved to do this with Bargs last summer but with Bargs committment to Italy, that wasn't a possibility.

English is working with him right now and has had success with bigs in the past. People that don't think that he can coach big man because he played forward during the NBA aren't seeing the big picture. Pete Newell, the guy that does this better than anyone in the world isn neither a 7-footer nor did he play a single minute in the NBA. And he's the cadillac of big man coaches. Now explain why a 6'8" hall-of-famer isn't capable of teaching Bargs a thing or two? The catch is, you need to have a hungry, willing student and I'm not convinced that Bargs is that guy.

Willis is a perfect example of how someone with short arms can still be a good rebounder with proper positioning.

Wasn't Robert Parish in town a couple weeks ago?

I'm not sure if he'd be interested, but this Newell camp thing is a step in the right direction.

Parish was in town last night. But he came under his alias "Greg Oden".

Umm, OK thanks for proving my point on him being a better rebounder or passer.

The stats do nothing to support who is the better mid range or inside player.. they both stayed on the outside.

We were discussing raw talent and with the stats so close like they are I give the edge to the 7 footer

maybe, its alex english who's supposed to be tutored by newell.

i dont think a 3-4 days camp for bargs will get much done. its gonna be even more difficult for him to communicate with a 93 year old english speaking man. besides, bargs doesnt strike me as an enthusiastic englisher speaker or a community member.

thats why i hope alex english also gets tutored by newell for an extended length of time, and teach bargs the way hes been taught. bargs going to the camp wouldnt hurt either.

There are no excuses when you are a 22 year-old millionaire whose only task is to stay in shape, play 15-25 minutes every other night. This guy has been babied every step of the way - we signed his GM and half of his Italian team just so he wouldn't get lonely. Its time for AB to ride the bike and hit the weights. Whenever he thinks about practicing his shot, he should do 4 sets on the bench and then run 6 miles. Whenever he plays soft, Smitch should smack him in the face and let him know. This is how Bargnani will get better.

What pisses me is the Leafs throw away money to every stiff on the free agent market while the Raps get screwed on their budget.

We are so lucky to have Bryan Colangelo on the Raptors side. That clown Peddie won't dare step on the basketball side of things. The Leafs are a mess and both the Teacher's Pension and Peddie are at fault. Until MLSE rids themselves of both, the Leafs will be the laughing stock of the league.

The Leafs don't spend a dime. As a result of the board of Governors that constantly meddle on the hockey side, Raycroft is still on the team (too cheap and stupid to cut him lose), JFJ should have been fired long time ago, Bowman wanted to come to Toronto but Peddie messed that one up, and Maurice should be on his way out as well.

Before we rag on the Raptors, imagine how a Leaf fan must feel right now :D No hope whatsoever and no Colangelo to clean up the mess.

This is very offensive. Why are these idiots still allowed to post on these forums. A complete joke.

More and more it is seeming like Andrea doesn't have the desire...

I don't know how any real basketball player, when asked vehemently to hit the glass, simply cannot.

The only guy I've seen do that is Antoine Walker and he still averaged a bunch of rebounds.
I_Like_Dirt wrote:The whole comparison to Kevin McHale is ridiculously close, imo... And that's without more hilarious aspects of the comparison, e.g. if Wally Sczerbiak were 7 feet tall with the slower reflexes that came with the additional height, he'd be Bargnani.

How in the world was his post offensive?

He basically said that Bargs needs to get tougher and you called him an idiot for it. Newsflash, you're the one being offensive in this scenerio.

Someone else suggested this, but frankly I don't think it's all that problematic. I happen to think a lot of it is pretty wrong, but none of it is actually offensive, that I can see, unless you think the 'slap him in his face' was meant literally as opposed to the hyperbole I took it to be.

I would say that if this is wrong or offensive, than 99.99999% of what was said in here about VC after the trade demand was downright illegal.

Edit-and I would appreciate people ceasing equating opinions they don't like with 'ok to insult' and 'should be banned', etc.

If you have a problem with the post, report it, or tell a mod, or ignore it. What you DON'T do is violate the TOS by personally insulting the poster AND backseat modding. Frankly your post violates the TOS more than the one you quoted. No official warning, but we are going to be cracking down on that kind of stuff here, so you might want to take note.

Well it was factually incorrect, full of hyperbole, based on a questionable if not dubious assumption, but aside from that, it wasn't offensive.

My bad I guess. I remember reading a totally different post a few hours ago. Must have been edited, take a look :) I like the cleaned post.

Bargs definitely needs to get tougher and more aggressive.
