It's hard to fire a guy who's tripled your money in a short time.

Yes, the Leafs are a guaranteed commodity and anyone could make a crap load off of them but I think people aren't fully aware of what MLSE encompasses. Peddie may suck at sports operations but he advises the board on other investments (especially real estate). And he's apparently damn good at all these other things.

It's a pretty simple decision as far as Peddie being moved/fired is concerned (operating under the pretense that there's an inherent risk of Peddie quitting if they "insult" him by asking him to relinquish the Leafs' president title). It's easier to stay the course and have Peddie make MLSE money through shrewed investments/business ventures than it is to revamp the hockey front office and hope to make more playoff revenue (lets not forget, changing management doesn't guarantee playoffs, especially in a cap system).

Would I like to see Peddie's role change? As a Leafs fan, I absolutely would. Nothing would make me happier than a competent fron office. But you have to look at it realistically and realize that there are some advantages to keeping Peddie happy for MLSE.

I agree with The-Insider.

If he can just be divested from any hockey operations just like he was divested from basketball operations, things would be a lot better for the teams. His strength isn't running sports team operations. It's running companies and selling a brand.

I have to admit, Peddie, no matter how much we hate him, has done a marvellous job financially. Heck, if I were in his position, I'd raise ticket prices too, knowing that people would still pay for them. It simply makes business sense to get people to pay up to their maximum tolerable threshold, especially since there isn't a rival Toronto-market NHL hockey team to compete with the Leafs.

Seriously. Do we think Peddie can repeat his performance and have another almost exponential increase in a couple of years under the present circumstances?

Some of that money was raised by flying the erroneous idea that the Leafs were a club to be reckoned with. A lot of chumps bought that ... hook, line and sinker.

That won't sell much longer. I have a friend who has Leaf tickets. They are a business investment to him. He give tickets away business associates. They love him for it. Some special clients he takes to the games and wines and dines them in the Hot Stove Lounge. Would you care to guess what he spends there? Do you think that the performance of the club plays any part in the decision making of his associates as to whether those aforementioned evenings are perks or not? You bet your bippy!
