I like that Mitchell doesn't put him in for garbage minutes. First of all, it's not really great practice, since a lot of players aren't going to be giving their best effort and plays are executed poorly. Second, if you put a player out for garbage time, you're basically telling him that he sucks. Garbage time minutes don't build confidence, if anything they kill confidence because players get used to the idea that they aren't good enough to play when the game is on the line.
It would be embarassing for Bargnani to become part of the garbage time unit. It's like "the game's over, might as well give some minutes to the guy who can't get it together." How is that going to give him his swagger back? It's better to continue to have high expectations and assume that he can perform well enough in the future to earn minutes. Based on his interviews, I think Sam has the same idea.
Sometimes I feel bad for the guys who have to come on at the end of the game and participate in what is often a comedy of errors as scrubs chuck threes, turn the ball over, and get completely lost on defence.
