Raptors defensive efg Stats

All we seem to talk about around here is offense, so I thought I'd add a bit of variety to the board with some defensive stats.

These stats certainly don't tell the whole story on defense, but they do give us something to think about and discuss.

I'm sure there'll be arguments like "how do we take into account the PG scoring even if TJ had to go and double team another player, so it's not his fault" scenario, so, below is the actual team opposition efg% while the player was on the court:

To give a bit of perspective on these numbers, so far this year, our overall team defense efg% is .498.

Wow @ Delfino's numbers. Just from observations I still think he a good defender.

I've always thought Ford was a very underrated defender. He's extremely pesky and plays the passing lanes well.

Jose, as expected is quite weak.

Other teams probably feel sorry for us when Martin is on the floor and take it easy on us, that's the only thing I can think of for his numbers.

Well, obviously, the stat on its own doesn't tell the whole story as Parker and Delfino are usually matched up vs. the best SG/SF scorers the opposition has, while Kapono usually covers the opposition's 2nd unit scorers.

Not a big fan of the opponent eFG% thing on 82games. Considering all the double teaming we give, the fact that they have a lot of our players out of position and it also doesn't keep track of who is guarding who.

For example: Kapono guarding Marbury.

Those stats show Delfino as a poor defender but the on/off court stats indicate the team is MUCH better with him on the floor defensively.

Like most stats, context is necessary. Moon's opp. eFG% is particularly impressive because he and Parker often split duties guarding the top opposing wing; that there is such a dramatic difference between the two speaks to Moon's impact.

Now, others such as Kapono need to be taken with a grain of salt. When he's on the court, whenever possible Smitch will (rightly) stick him on the worst offensive player between 6'3" and 6'9" that happens to be on the floor. Conversely, Delfino (who often plays alongside Kapono) guards the better scorer. Thus, while Kapono is better by .3%, Delfino's numbers are actually more impressive given match-ups.

And Joey appears capable of locking down only players with less than two or more than eight limbs...
