Max players demanding trades
After hearing Jason Kidd demand a trade, I got to thinking...Who actually deserves the chance to demand trades?
I think Kidd has earned it andany GM shoulod respect his wishes...he's taken teams to the finals, and had a glorious career.
Guys like Gasol, who are relatively young and haven't really done much who earn max contracts, don't deserve this type of respect. They can't demand the GM to get help or whatever....
Here's my list of frnachise players w/ max contracts who whine and bitch, but still have fans respect:
Shaq,Kidd, Garnett (hasn't done much but we all know what he brings to the table and how he carries mediocre teams), even Ben wallace cuz he was a real contributor for an NBA champion
No respect for Jermaine, Vince, T-MAC, Marbury,
I'm prolly missing a bunch, but feel free to add and discuss

My thoughts exactly. I love Kidd, he's one of my favourite players ever, but he signed a contract and is in it for the good and the bad.
Honour your decision and play out your contract.

I disagree when you say Kidd deserves it...glorious career???
He has very good stats (lots of 3ple doubles - yes he is a very good rebounder), but he has no glorious career in terms of winning.
Parker & Billups have a better winning career.
You can not say that Kidd had no good players around him, I don't think Billups had much better players. He is just more consistent and a true team leader.
I like Kidd for his court vision, but since he's got probably the best PG contract, he should suck it up and be a true leader. He is among the best payed NBA players, and IMO over payed & over ratted...

Ya thats the way to do it for sure. But it just isn't a reality in the NBA today. The only way out is to ask for trades, and the point of this thread is to debate who has earned it....well at least that was my intention

I agree that players carpetbagging and demanding trades is a problem and players should honour their contracts. At the same though, shouldn't the team have a commitment to winning as well?
I hate on Vince and the way he handled his departure, but what if it was another star player in a similar situation, stuck on a team being run into the ground by the Peddie-phile? Should they not be allowed to voice their displeasure?

I think he's Hall of Fame calibre, and the fact that he's been to the Finals twice with vastly overated teams, and his multiple All star selections, and his contributions to team USA at least gives him the status of an elite PG.
Having said this, I never liked Jason Kidd, but he's certainly one of the players who actually has a case to ask for a trade

If management has the right to trade a player, he should ahve the right to ask for a trade. They are both involved in the contract, but management can ship a player anywhere they want any time they want...so why should the player not be able to ask to be moved? It goes both ways...
The NFL is even worse...if a player has a great year after signing a low-end contract, the team laughs all the way to the bank. The player can hold out for a bigger contract but then everyone vilifies the player, who signed a contract. But on the other hand, if a player signs a contact and then has a bad year, the team can just flat out cut him. Seems a little unfair to me.
Basically, both parties to the contract should have the same rights. If you have a no-trade clause, then maybe you shouldn't ask for a trade, but other than that, fair is fair.

Anyone who thinks someone has a right to demand a trade is crazy. For one thing, when a guy signs for top dollar, he's hurting the team by taking up cap space. If a guy truly wants to win, he needs to take less money so the team can sign more good players.
I recall when the Nets signed VC, Kidd had given the okay to management. It didn't work out. And now he wants out. He should have told management last year to get rid of VC and use the money elsewhere.
It's really too bad how much control these players have.

One of the smartest things I've read on here!
BTW, Players union will never agree to that. and they probably already don't allow players to demand trades publicly. It just "leaks out" and players confirm its validity

They could ask to be traded, but NOT through the media. Stick to more discreet channels. This way their value remains high and the team is able to attempt to recoup value.
Prettty sure they are discreet about it at first, then when nothing happens, they go to the media.
You can't sit here and tell me Kidd hasn't been wanting a trade until just now.

this is what i think they should do with the new bargaining agreement comin up in respect with players on max contracts or any contract who wants out or dont honor the contract and wants a buyout....
if they want a buyout?
pay them what they are owed that season, watever how many years left and money on that contract should be voided, wtf should a team pay out the remaining on the contract when those years remaining, the services of that player will be not ascertain by that team....
