it is my understanding the raptors must have a 1st round pick this year as they did not have a pick in last year's draft. the 2009 1st round pick would be a possible asset.

Some really poor value assessors on this board. Really, keep your prejudices out of it.

Most valued assets - likely to fetch the best deals.

1. Juan Dixon: As an expiring contract, it doesn't get better than this if we find a team with a decent player on a longer deal. If we were to put a package together for an upgrade, he'd almost certainly be part of it. The same logic makes D-Mart exhibit 1A.

2. Chris Bosh: Recognized as an all-star, franchise type player, who has two more seasons after this on his max contract. Due to his combination of age, skill, athleticism and achievements, he'd be a player many teams would love to have. But it would be hard to get back full value. I mean, who has a surplus Wade or Lebron to give up?

3. Jose Calderon: A pass first point guard who also is top 10 in FG% for a non-post player and a top 10 3 pt shooter with an excellent A/TO ratio. Only 26, a leader, a low maintenance personality. Should not be traded for less than a 20 ppg wing player nearing or at his prime. But we can't afford to spare him now.

4. Jason Kapono: This is about most tradable so let's be blunt. We don't use Kapono for maximum efficiency because we don't yet have the presence in the paint that commands constant double coverage, but for a team like the Lakers or Rockets which do have a great high-low combination, Kapono could camp out in the corner and hit wide open three pointers until the cows come home. Keep in mind the Rockets have one of the lowest 3 pt percentages in the league (last time I checked, they were THE lowest, 10 percentages points below the Raptors). Don't sell short a guy who shoots 52% beyond the arc on a proven, steady basis.

5. Anthony Parker: I bet the Spurs among others would love to have AP, especially with Brent Barry down for an extended period. AP's solid two-way game - and high 3 pt percentage - are perfect for one of the West contenders. His contract is excellent. We might even get value for him; if the Lakers - who will have considerable luxury tax to pay next year - consider a salary dump, a package of AP and Dixon for Lamar Odom is not so far-fetched, and actually meets the basketball criteria of adding strength where it is needed for a deep playoff run.

6. Andrea Bargnani: I have him this low not because of where his value was three weeks ago - he's pretty much restored his value to where one would have expected it to be around now - but because it's hard to know what an opposing GM would be willing to give up. When AB plays like he has the last seven games, you would think BC will win his gamble of making Bargnani into a C, one of the hardest positions on the court to fill. And when you consider AB's draft position, his upside, his unique combination of skills for a seven footer, you know it would take a pretty astounding offer to trade Bargnani now. And considering Rasho's expiring contract value this summer, we have to think of who will play C if Rasho is traded. But from a strict ranking, Bargnani would fetch, even now, a significant piece in return on upside alone. It just might not be enough for you - let alone BC - to pull the trigger this year.

7. Rasho: A competent big who can start or come off the bench. Low maintenance, healthy, widely respected. His value goes up this summer. One unknown: Is his final year fully guaranteed? If not, he's even more valuable.

8. Humphries: Young, with some upside and a great contract. No BYC restriction applies either. Probably doesn't get as much as we would like, but would be an interesting part of a package with our draft choice or other players.

9. Moon: He'd really be attractive as a dirt cheap reserve, perhaps paired in a trade with Dixon and D-Mart.

10. Ford's here not on talent but on trade value. So don't take this as a Hater comment. He's top 3 on talent, but you can't trade his remaining $25 million of salary with his injury record unless you take back severely damaged goods like Nene. It's better at this point to just keep Forderon and hope that TJ will remain relatively healthy while we knock another season or two off his contract. But the fact is, his injury situation is so well-publicized, we can never get full value for his talent.

11. Delfino: Let's see what kind of contract he commands. He is a signing risk in a trade. He's more likely to sign for a reasonable deal here, where he has expressed his happiness.

12. Baston, Graham, Garbajosa: More value this summer, but Graham could move up the ladder as trade filler who actually has a bit of upside.

Raptors Roster: Expiring Contracts

Juan Dixon $2,900,000
Kris Humphries $2,522,913
Jose Manuel Calderon $2,471,604
Carlos Delfino $1,868,141
Darrick Martin $1,219,590
Jamario Moon $427,163

We have 15 players, we could package Dixon+Martin for a single player in return. Maybe BC can flip Dixon+Martin for a third-string PG?

I'm looking at the roster for next year, and we have 9 players under contract (assuming Rasho exercises his $8,400,000 player-option for next year). Including Rasho's player-option, the 9 players are on the books for a little over $55,000,000 in salary.

I estimate the NBA salary cap for 08-09 to be around $58,000,000. The luxury tax should be set around $70,000,000. With 9 players under contract, and $55,000,000 already spoken for, Colangelo has some critical decisions to make.

What will it cost to keep Calderon? Do we keep Delfino? Where does Moon fit in? Signing these three would cost at least 12 million a year in total, probably closer to 14 million. 9 players @ 55 million plus 3 players @ 12 million (cheap estimate) equals 12 players at 67 million.

In this scenario, at 3 million under the luxury tax level for 08-09, we still need 2 players to fill the league-minumum 14 players. We haven't account for Humphries yet! Would more money be spent in this scenario to keep him? What about Roko, is he part of Colangelo's plan?

Things are going to get very interesting as Colangelo manipulates the basketball pieces to build a better Raptor team. Hopefully he has the full support of MLSE to do what's necessary to improve the team, with financial support being essential to success.

In realtiy right now we dont have to trade any of our "assets" We arent contending for the title this year or even next year. So I dont see no point right now.

It really depends on how you define assets. If a team is already a contender then the chance that there actually is a scenario that warrants trading a major asset is incredibly slim. You make major trades to become a contender, not once you already are one. It does make more sense to trade picks and minor prospects for specific help one a team is a contender, however if a team isn't a contender it makes far more sense to look at more major changes that could potentially turn a team into a contender.

I really think the Raps need to seriously consider moving Calderon if they can get an all-star caliber wing player right now.

Of course they have to feel like Ford will be here and healthy to move Calderon.

Right now Calderon's value is at an all-time high. Less teams will be interested in trading for him if he signs a 5 year $60 million contract this offseason.

If Toronto could get a player like Gerlad Wallace(They have JRich), Josh Smith(They have Marvin Williams), Danny Granger(They have Dunlevy) Toronto should make the move to turn this team from pretended to EC Contender.

All 3 of those guys can defend guys like Pierce, Butler, Lebron, Jefferson, etc in the EC playoffs.
