OT- Aaron Doornekamp to the NBA? Response to Backovic Hype
Semi-OT- Aaron Doornekamp to the NBA?
IF Boris Bakovic is considered by some to be a legitimate nba prospect because he scores 28 points for a team below .500 in the CIS then you would think a player on the country's best team (the country's best player) would be able to get drafted.
I have seen him play before, and was very impressed when i saw him play against Windsor, he scored 35 the night..
- He is a member of the Canadian National team as a 21 year old
- He is 6'7 220 and can shoot, pass, handle very well..
- What do you think of the kid's shot to make the NBA (good? Horrible? etc)
I would say he could be a Luke Walton type at the NBA level, knock down the open three, pass it well, etc. They are actually quite alike.
Has anyone seen him play, and if so what can you tell me about the guy.

First off, the Canadian national team isn't that good. Second, if these Canadian kids actually had chops, they'd be playing NCAA ball somewhere - even a mediocore team in a big conference or good team in a small conference would put them light years ahead in terms of coaching, development, training, competition and exposure. In fact, Coach Rautins should be encouraging and brokering shcolarships for highschoolers with promise and transfers for those kids who have already started school up here - best thing for them and best thing for the National team as well.

We're starting two undrafted players and have two more on our roster. I'd say that if these undrafted "kids" actually had chops, they would have been drafted somewhere - even late second round. The point is, there are always exceptions to rules and a smart GM doesn't restrict his vision. Jamario Moon's last minor league head coach was a part-time Cleveland scout, and he recommended Moon to Danny Ferry, but Ferry hesitated because nobody else seemed interested in Moon, his argument being, "If he's as good as you say he is, why aren't there other teams interested". The rest, as they say, is history.
I've never seen this kid play, but I am not going to dismiss him outright because he didn't follow the usual career path.

I played some pick-up against him at the local Y when he was much younger. Cant really comment on how good he is since he was about 16 at the time.
I always thought his bro was a good center in college. A nice shot and he played within his game. He must be in Europe now. You would think Leo would have a use for a 7-footer like him on the National team.
Way far off-topic...It would be nice if Raptors TV had a show with Leo profiling some of the Nat Team members and Canadians in the NCAA. It seems like the only time you ever hear about them is at a big tournament (aside from Dalembert who hear about all game every time we play the sixers).
I am sure others are keen to see how are Canadians are performing in the NCAA and abroad. Arent they?

I go to Carleton so I see the guy play all the time... and just fyi his brother played for Boston College, I'm pretty sure Aaron could've gone south he just wanted to stay in Canada.
He's a pretty solid all around player, he plays more of a perimeter style though he's a little oversized for his position, but he can definitely bang in the post too. Great shooter, loves a challenge... my favourite play I've seen from him was when they played Alabama earlier this year (Carleton won, btw) and one of Alabama's threw down a monster dunk... about two minutes later Doornekamp went up for a huge dunk over a much bigger guy... he got called for the charge but I thought it exemplified what a competitor the guy is.
I don't know if he'd ever be an NBA quality talent but he has been awesome to watch here at Carleton and is a big part of the reason we've won 5 straight CIS championships

Moon was undrafted, I'll give you that. The rest played professional basketball in Europe (which requires chops), so you don't get credit for that.

True, but Moon has a 46" vertical and was D-League MVP or some such thing. If these kids had a 46" vertical and were D-League MVP material, I suspect someone would've noticed by now - I would also encourage them to transfer to Bradley or Florida State immediately. If (unlike Moon, who I suspect didn't pass his SATs) they are smart enough to get into a Canadian school they could certainly get into one of the 70+ schools in major US conferences.

I agree, if the were really that good they'd be in D1 as we speak. Not in the CIS.

I go to a few Ravens games a year. Ive seen Ryerson play 4 times. Bakovic is going nowhere. Ive never seen a more passive, afraid of contaact player every. Their coach screams at him constantly. Also, Aaron's chances of making the NBA are pretty much zero in my opinion. On the Ravens, Id say that Ryan Bell has the best chance, although still pretty low. If Nate didnt make it, Aaron's not going to.

You don't think we have good coaches or strength and conditioning coaches in Canada?

I agree with what you said.. if Nate didn't make it (who went to BC), then I don't see Aaron making it.. although it'd be nice to see a Raven make it to the NBA though..
Agreed about Ryan Bell.. I'd say Jeanty, but he seemed undersized, at least Bell has some height and defensive ability.

Aaron is the best out of them all.. Os is outstanding and is playing well in Europe, but might be a bit undersized to defend the point guards in the league.. He could fill an Earl Boykin's role because of his ability to shoot it (he was probably the top or one of the top shooters the last 5 years in college in north america and the reason they won 5 straight national championships)
As for Aaron, I just think he has the most potential of them all.. being 6'7 could really help him make the NBA, because his skill is definitely up to par, its just an athleticism thing if he could defend 3's in the nba as well as a Walton could.. doing research he dominated Alabama and Illinois this year (beating Alabama and losing to Illinois in Overtime).
I think the kid can do it.. He would be a late pick in the 2nd round obviously or go undrafted and make it after an nba tryout.. but i dont see why you dont try to go after a kid that has won 3 national championships, and is on his way to winning a 4th this year (They are i think 20-0 or 22-0 so far and he is by far the best player in the CIS')...

just curious, and this isn't to rip a CIS player's chances, but how many CIS players have played in the NBA? let's say in the last 30 years. i think UBC had players in the 1950's etc.
i can't think of one. there was that guy with african last name (will ?????) with one of the maritime schools who got drafted...... was mike smrek CIS?? if not, i can't think of one.
i'm sure a bunch of these carleton players could have played in NCAA. there are alot of teams, and frankly the level of play when i watched live march madness last year wasn't very high, and that's the top teams.
