I'm praying to God Masai stays but look at the article itself;

We hope so,” Tanenbaum, who is MLSE part-owner and long-time chairman, said earlier this week at the Board of Governors’ meeting in Pebble Beach, Calif. “We haven’t talked (about an extension) at this point in time, but if you ask him, his intentions are pretty clear.”

Masai has a contract that goes for another two years — this season and next season — so there’s really no need at this point (to re-sign him),” he said.

That actually makes me feel more unsure then before.

Well at the very end he says Masai is here to stay.

But I have said this many many many times. From Masai's point of view, it makes no sense to extend right now. His value, at the very worst, will remain the same but there is a solid chance it goes up. Masai probably doesnt even know how much he will ask for. He will wait until the very end to make sure he gets every penny he is due and that is of course his right. Lets say we re upped him today to make him the richest exec in the NBA, and next year some other exec gets paid even more. If being the highest paid exec in the game matters to Masai, that situation is entirely avoided by just waiting. If we pay Masai his value +50%, in 2 years he can almost certainly get his value + 75% (just arbitrary numbers but you get my point)

From ownership's POV, if Masai has privately told them he will wait for his contract to expire, there is no sense at pushing an extension towards him. Its probably what Masai wants at the end of the day. "put your best foot forward, believe in your city" type thing.

Again why hasn’t he been offered an extension? It makes no plausible sense. If there is no doubt on MLSE’s part then give him the a sweetheart extension now. No ifs ands or buts. What could possibly change in the next 18 months that would change the terms of a new extension?

Doesn’t add up unless Masai has refused to negotiate one yet which is concerning. Why would he do that if he’s certain he wants to stay? This article actually muddies the water even more. Now I’m actually worried because Larry’s words are weirdly similar to when Masai said he was confident that Kawhi would make the right decision.

If someone told you in January 2018 that in June 2019 the Raptors would be a league juggernaut in defense, Casey would no longer be coach, Demar would be traded, Siakam would be a budding superstar, and that Kawhi Leonard and Marc Gasol would be a Raptors, you'd think it was such a long shot that it was almost a sure thing to bet against.

A lot can change in 18 months.

Masai's value can easily continue to skyrocket and place him in a position to demand more than what MLSE is offering now. He likely just doesn't want to pin himself down before necessary and give up any advantage in negotiations.

THANK YOU!!! Its not that hard to fathom this is what is going on. Masai is cut throat business man and we effing love him for it. Let the man do his thing...its not our money and MLSE will happily pay him like they should.

The article doesn't exactly inspire confidence. That being said the legitimacy of the rumours about Masai's interest in return seems poorly sourced and more like speculation.

Lol.....read the article, not the headline......

Not sure this is set in stone in any way, shape or form.

It does suck though that this negative chatter about Masai is happening after the championship. After enduring a year of not knowing about Kawhi, it's unfortunate that we have to hear this and can't just enjoy the season. And let's be honest the chatter started within seconds of us winning with the Washington rumor. People generally don't like it when we have nice things...

It's not very common to negotiate a new contract when there's still 2 years left on a deal.

It makes no sense for Masai to negotiate now. His price will only be higher in 2021.

If the Knicks want Masai right now (and Masai express his desire to take the job) make the Knicks pay:

2 unprotected First round Picks (this year, and 2022)
1 top 20 protected pick in 2024 (converters to a 2nd round pick in 2024 if not convey)

No negotiation, no wiggle room. Take it or leave it Dolan

Typical NY rumor about getting everyone. Never fails.

Didnt know he was on for two more years. Hes definitely going to play out his team salary strategy for a superstar.

His tactic is simply. Let teams fight over me and I can use them to leverage what I want. MU already knows what he wants and which team he wants to work for imo. It's like how Leonard used teams to make the clippers go out and get PG

Id honestly rather keep Masai.
Picks are picks. But look at all the teams that have been **** for years that haven't sniffed a proper title run.

We did it without lottery picks with proper management.
I'll take that any day.

5 more years of Masai is preferable to 30 years of Knicks 1st round draft picks.

You forgot to bold the part "but if you ask him, his intentions are pretty clear".

It would have to be way more than two firsts, that's the problem. That's also why it makes little sense for them. Maybe if they make us a Paul George deal. That's more realistic for the best GM in the game.

The leverage point makes more sense tbh. Unless we're champs again in 2021, two years from now. This is the top for any executive, we just won. People always use NY for leverage, that's not new. It's a bit far out, but not if you want to lock it up early.

Tanenbaum, the meddling dum dum behind many years of Leafs failures. Just hope, no pray this man does not go full hands on in Masai and Websters team. The only good years the Leafs ever had were when Stavros owned the team and muted Larry. No coincidences there, he is the mirror of Ballard.

It’s never Beene higher than it is now. What do you think is more likely. The Raps winning another title this year or losing in the first round? I’m thinking the latter. It would be foolish to not cash in now. Even if the Raps make it back to the ECF, his value remains the same. I think we can all agree it’s very unlikely they go back to back this year so why wait?

Too many things can go wrong that only hurts his position. Lowry continues to regress because he’s getting old and broken down. FVV gets a max offer in free agency and bolts and Pascal doesn’t progress anymore and how’s he preforming now is his ceiling which is fine but he’s getting paid superstar money. The team could be life and death for the playoffs next year if those things happen which aren’t that remote. And then why would MLSE open the vault more in 18 months than they would now for him.

I really think Masai is looking at options outside the Raptors and that’s why there’s no extension. Doesn’t mean he won’t re-up but it’s a hardly a given that he’s staying. If he loved it here that much, he would’ve signed already coming off the high of a championship. That’s just smart business. Just like a player signing a big extension after a MVP season, why wait an extra year when chances are you’re not gonna repeat that MVP season if you zero intention of going elsewhere.

How much more could Masai really get by waiting? An ownership stake? MLSE would not give him that unless the Knicks did and there’s zero chance of that happening. Nor from any other team. He’s won one title not several or Kerr and Popovich would have ownership stakes by now.

Larry has proven himself in the past to be very naive when it comes to people's true desires. He never fills me with confidence when it comes his negotiating ability

Mods need to do their job and just delete any thread about masai leaving coming from anybody covering the Knicks. The knicks are desperate to give their fanbase hope, and they know most Americans have no clue what's going on with the Raptors and will believe their reports because they simply don't know any better.
