Last season SMU had a DRTG of 98 with him on the court and and ORTG of 132, so per 100 possessions SMU outscored their opponents by 34 points when Semi was on the court. So I'd say he was a pretty good defender in college, but in the pros with pro athletes we'll have to wait and see. If he can guard 3's one on one he's a HUGE steal.

From what I've seen he'd be okay agaisnt average 3s. Guys like Tobias Harris or Batum. I don't see him doing well agaisnt the PG13s or LeBrons of the league tho. He can switch onto whoever but the better PGs probably burn him. He's strong enough to contest a post up but not long enough to protect the rim. So he looks like an average defender. He has a great work ethic tho so maybe he can become a PJ Tucker type defender.

I actually prefer a guy like Jordan Bell a lot more because of Semi's shortcomings defensively. Jordan will be able to guard 1-5, and that jump shot is getting better every day. I think he is a much better value pick.

I wouldn't be mad at Bell. Looks like a good pick. He was great at the combine. Him and Pascal would be an extremely atheltic and versatile frontcourt. Poetl too.

Re-sign PJ Tucker and draft Bell for him to mentor!

You know because it is #23 I fully expect us to go Mathias Who? If Leaf is there at 23 though it will be hard to pass on his shooting potential and overall athletic ability. There are concerns about defending but since he's a freshman he would be going to 905 for what I would expect is the destruction of most of that competition. Great place to tighten up defensively. Leaf looks like a small forward-power forward hybrid at least skills and agility wise. Some say his narrow shoulders are the reason his wingspan measurements are poor but his standing vertical is quite respectable. Will he even be there at 23? I bet he does not get past the Pacers.

Semi is strong and quick getting has all the tools to be a good defender. Along with his hard work demeanor and high volume (plus good percentage shooting). It's a no brainer.

Most prefer Maryland's Justin Jackson for his defensive potential. He also has offensive tools.

June 22nd, NBA Draft 2017

Post#108 » by provecy15 » Mon May 15, 2017 2:14 pm

We have the 23rd pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Who do you like?

We drafted two bigs last year and two guards the year before.

Justin Jackson? NCAA champ, has length and can shoot the 3.

Harry Giles? Yes he is a risk, but his hands like Kawhi Leonard and a high talent ceiling.

Luke Kennard? 3pt specialist

Josh Hart? Yes he's a senior, but so was Norm. Might be worth a look.

Hamidou Diallo? jump out of the gym talent.

just a few names who could be there when we select.

We need high ceiling talents with the potential to become shooters.

This. He has good size and nice all around ability.

Wouldn't mind us taking him.

I'm done trying to guess what this team will come do draft time. For over a decade nearly every time the obvious pick is there for the taking we end up with something wild and out of left field. Everyone knows who the consensus few guys are at that spot - but we'll never grab one of those guys.. and that's been going on for a long long time.

I spent so much time in the past discussing draft picks, talents, scouting, watching videos, and I'm done with it; it's not worth the effort because this team never drafts that player. I'll just wait 'till we pick and watch some videos like I did with Poeltl.

Hood or Capela? Nah let's take Bruno.

Iguodala, nah Hoffa is a good choice

Batum or Hibbert? No let's trade for one legged Jermaine O'neal

The only standard pick that made sense was BC grabbing DeRozan at 9, and JV at 5 to some extent (could've had Kemba in hindsight - oh my). Delon Wright has been a surprise as well, but I think the jury is still out. He's shown flashes of what he can do, but that doesn't say much until you see a player get consistent minutes over the course of an entire season to know what they're truly capable of under the rigors of the NBA. Masai is unpredictable nevertheless. Poeltl's positional defense looks good - but he looks like a decently skilled garbage man to me - a young Zaza type with better blocking - his ceiling doesn't look that high as far as I'm concerned.

I trust Masai more so than all the other guys we've had in the past though and I think Weltman knows wtf he is doing, Powell was very nice. Need to see more though to judge if I can start trusting in a Raptors first round draft again to the point where I'll actually spend time analyzing pre-draft.

I will say Masai surprise us a little by selecting Sindarius Thornwell. Dude is mature, have a nice physical size for a wing. He has a high motor and high PER in college. Seems like someone Casey pick too?

In the last couple of years, Masai picked older college players with high PER. I will not be surprised if we pick him

Not the standard ones. There was one that has which team is working out which players. Also has gossip on how the players are percieved. I deleted my favourites and I can't find it anymore.

It's funny that I keep reading how the pick will be a shock, but Delon was not a surprise. He was mocked to go right in our range and was my pick and the pick of a few people here that entire season since we lacked point guard depth.
Poeltl was the consensus pick on most mocks.
Siakam went a few spots earlier than expected, but was not some huge unknown like Bruno.

The last WTF pick was Bruno. They do happen and they've happened too often with this franchise, but Masai has been picking safe and predictable of late. I guess that could change as the team is stuck in a treadmill(a high end one, but still they've reached their ceiling), so he may be willing to gamble. I don't expect another shocker though. At most, someone ranked 5-10 spots below their ranking in most mocks.
