I think it would have to be the opposite. Sergio is head coach and Fernandez comes over as lead assistant with an understanding that after a few years Sergio retires and Jordi steps in. There is no chance that Sergio would come to be an assistant again I don’t think and under a first time head coach on top of that.
How often do teams let assistants leave for lateral positions? I believe Jordi is already the lead assistant in Sacramento.
I think he is a step above, listed as an "associate head coach." I think it is not often that a non-head coach moves to a lateral position but you look at Nate Bjorkgren and he lost his head coach role and became an assistant again.
Maybe Jordi treats this differently because he has worked with Scar before with the Spanish NT. Maybe Scar is a legend and a big mentor and you go to Toronto because the respect level is so high. Or, maybe as Zeno said there is a pathway to being a future head coach. I mentioned it before, but Mike Brown is like early 50s and Scar is 62 - so how long does Jordi want to wait?
You wait too long you end up like Sam Cassell - career assistant to Doc Rivers.
