He made a mistake and paid for it.

I feel for him alot. Gambling is an addiction and disease. The NBA and the Sportsbooks are the the real evil. But your world is safer now that Jontay is gone. I'm sure they caught the real problem today and it wont happen again in the NBA and no other families will suffer from the affect of gambling.

I don't think you understand how gambling work. Some people, probably Raptors fans who were excited about Jontay's potential, bet the over. They lost money, solely because of Jontay's decisions. That's theft. Literal theft.

I had a friend who was addicted to gambling (on stocks), got busted by his wife, and had to go through the 12 step process (one of which was to meet me for coffee and admit what he had done). But he wasn't manipulating the market like Jontay was. He didn't have an addiction problem. He had a fraud problem. And it is, or should be, criminal.

You realize I support the punishment as there is no other option in this case with the money that is involved. He isn't the first player, and he wont be the last. And most will never be caught.

Gambling affects many people in many ways, the innocent and the evil. And it's all negative except for those at the top profiting off of the illness.

I don't believe Jontay was evil. He wasn't even making that much off his bets, he was just making dumb decisions and the guy needs support for his issues. The promotion of gambling by the NBA will ruin far more lives then Jontay ever could if he never got caught and its not even close.

Total dummy. If he fought hard and got signed an actual NBA contract, he would have made more.

Right it was bonehead. As I said. He has now paid far worse then the impact of the crime committed and I indeed hope he gets support for his gambling problems.

You talking like he's a drug dealer or worse? When the only reason his punishment is so sever is because it affects the NBA's bottom line. Otherwise it's simply a guy that needs rehab and support for an addiction.

Jontay has been punished and the NBA is the greater issue people should be talking about, but wont because they got their low hanging pinata to kick at and deflect.

I don't think you understand the severity of his actions.

You do the crime, you do the time. He's actually getting off easy if this is just an NBA ban and no criminal charges. Look up fraud in the U.S. and what comes with that.

I don't want to derail but everyone here going ballistic after hearing he bet the Raptors to lose = criminal activity? So native, did you know only 1 banker went to jail for the entire 2008 GFC? There are much worse crimes that go unpunished than Jontay stealing some money from gamblers

Rightfully so. It's fraud by definition and yes its criminal activity. That's just what it is. Go steal from your bank and see what happens.

He also would have got a cut from his associate who was betting the under on games he faked an injury. He also would have kept doing those bets if they had got away with it. It's criminal and any league would ban any player who did this, now or before legal gambling arrived.

They pretty obviously did the Raps a solid holding off on this announcement until after the players and coach spoke to the media. No need to make them address this.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Great job Adam Silver

There is nothing wrong as I see it on an athlete betting on other sport

I would argue even this is wrong. These guys have way more access to information than the average person. They would know about injuries etc through friends or agents. It's essentially the same as insider trading.

That's the difference - he stole from other gamblers, not an institution that has power - not getting to get criminal charge from it.

He got punished for causing loss of integrity / reputation of NBA

fraud is fraud. He got punished for gambling on NBA games, cheating the game and fans and frauding betting organizations (now legal)

Not sure how you're coming to this conclusion when the money he's stealing would be coming from the sportsbooks he and his associates placed the bets on

In the end, I'm just saying he got what he deserved and not less not more. Others calling for criminal charges are naive

As I think about it more, maybe I do feel a little bad for him. Bet he’s a gambling addict. Which means he has real problems and his addiction just ruined a big part of his life and future. Hopefully it’s a wake up call.

I do wonder what the NBA would do if Porter played t he addiction card.

You cant use addiction as an excuse for everything. Pedophiles cant help if they are attracted to young people, that doesn't mean its okay to prey on children.

Example 2. Drunk driver cant help it because they are an alcoholic.

He can still be a degenerate gambler and not bet on his own parlays

Exactly! There are a million other things to bet on.

I was really hoping that he didn't screw himself but he ****ing screwed himself and his NBA dream. Just another black eye on this season. The cherry on top would be conveying the pick.

I cannot understand working this hard for this long, finally getting your big break and then throwing it all away for pennies on the dollar. I don't even get the addiction angle, it's like being hooked on a very specific strain of kush - you can legally gamble on anything else.

The thing about addiction is it makes people do irrational and self destructive ****. I spent many many years working in the industry and you see it all the time. Part of why it’s so jarring is because it doesn’t make sense and people will throw away everything for their addiction.
