Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread - Part 5
until scottie can make the turn and go north/south off a pick, he can't play pg. he dribbles alot without purpose and goes east/west instead of north/south as the lead ball handler. he needs to put in major work in that aspect if he really wants to be a pg. he has the mentality but not the requisite skills right now. if he can do that, then his next step would be to counter drop coverages b/c they all will do that and dare him to shoot.
bottom line - he needs alot of skill development to make himself an nba level pg.

Agreed, I also don't see why he needs to be a point guard. That should not be his role moving forward. He's much more effective in other roles. He has a lot of work to do to be a point guard and just not sure it's possible for him to develop all of those skills.

We really don't know what he'll be 3 years from now.
What I do know is that if he wants to truly manipulate defenses, he needs to become a much, much better scorer/shooter than he is now.

Scottie playing PG is a game changer for the team. I’m not giving up on the dream, yet.
We get way too caught up in "point guard". He's more of a Luka, James, Jimmy Butler in clutch type archetype who will run the point no matter what position he plays. He's not really built to be a "guard" but he will play point.

I’ve always defined a player’s position based on who they defend. Scottie can’t guard PGs right now. If his conditioning improves and he is able to, I’d label him a PG at that time.
Edit: he can switch off onto PGs in a defensive scheme/rotation/scramble but to pick up full court like he alluded to, he can’t…yet

in scottie's point of attack defense - nurse had him and all our guys pressing 10 feet behind the 3 point line. nobody in this league can stay in front of anyone that far out.

At his size it will never be ideal to guard Trae, Morant, the small quick guards generally. It will help to back off a bit from Nick's press e ball high system, but lightning PGs will never be his ideal matchup
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

True.
And even small lightning quick guards can’t guard small lightning quick guards. No hand checking changed the game dramatically.

Yep. Safe to assume that the whole "give the opponent the penetration and then sell-out for the paint collapse" won't be around next season. So it'll be alot more fair to assess point of attack defense of individuals going forward.

Initially I hated seeing him back with this guy...but then I remembered we fired almost every coach we have lol. I think this is a temporary patch until we find our coach + assistantsHumbleRen wrote:

It doesn’t matter who he trains with in the offseason if Trash Van Fleet and Siakam are going to be our two stars on offense.

I distinctly remember this play because I feel like the outcome here really hid one of Scottie's main flaws - he struggled to post up Caruso with his high stance.
I'd love for him to take this kind of move from Lowry's bag, a pivoting post-up that doesn't let the defender set their feet and stand you up straight on:

It only works if your footwork/handle is good enough that the defender has to honour your spins and counterspins.

Scottie's hips are so high, it's going to be really hard for him to implement that movement.
Needs to hit them yoga stretches to get really low in his stance.
This move is virtually unguardable because of how soft his touch is, I rather him hone this move.

I think it's part and parcel of the same skill base. He's got to learn how to get lower on his dribble, make contact later in the drive when he's got some momentum and not early on. Secondly, when your first step is average, the footwork and counters have to be super clean. JJJ is so close to poking the ball away there and Barnes' gather is very sloppy, the stance isn't conducive to a spin and shooting it over the other shoulder.
