Lol the vols are 8-31 from the field and 0-11 from downtown to start against Texas, how the hell is this team supposed to win the title. Houston and Iowa state have the same problem, their offenses stall like crazy at times.

Gradey > Reed
Reed ended the season horribly but college gradey is not a better prospect then him imo
Gradey's size and athleticism favors him.
Reed might struggle against the physicality in the NBA. Could see him being Pritchard 2.0
I think that's the only real advantage he has tho Reed has shown alot more as a creator

Maybe because if they shot the ball even at an average clip for them they would have beaten a top 25 team by 30+.

Terrence Shannon with 30 pts, 8/8 from FT line, an older prospect but can defend the perimeter. Was overlooked last year, same excuses.
Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

He might get overlooked again this year but this time for other reasons.

Creighton blowing wide open layups and missing tons of open shots all game, absolutely brutal showing

Do you really trust them against a team like UConn that protects the ball and can lock them down on D?

Should be some interesting matchups in the Sweet 16 based on today's games. I'll be particularly interested in Tennessee vs Creighton. I've been wondering for a while if Knecht is really that much better of a prospect or player than Scheierman, and now we'll get to see them head-to-head.

Re: 2024 NBA DRAFT THREAD 2
So the issue with Edey on defence seems to be that Painter thinks he is too slow (or his 3 guards too small and not defensive rebounding enough) to play anything but drop coverage. So he's giving up a pull-up jumper in the P+R whenever a decent pick is set. Right now that's a lot of long 2s and the math is okay, but in the NBA, that's a lot of Dame Lillard or even our own Quickley pull-up 3s at a decent rate. So any team that takes Edey cannot have guards that can't fight through picks, and probably needs good size at the 3/4 to be able to cover ground. Barnes is well-suited to it, Barrett less so, and I honestly haven't locked in during games to examine how Quickley deals with good screens.
I have no worries about his offence. He's massive, fundamentally sound, improves every year and takes no bad shots.

Where's the D?

Here's my problem with Edey. It takes him far too long to gather and make a move. His offense doesn't translate for me at the NBA level. He's not a good passer, his drop coverage is non existent, and his touch around the basket doesn't seem like it's anything special.
I honestly dont take him with any of our picks other than #31

Edey at 31 would be terrible. There are a lot of rotation level specialist we could add. I would rather find a guy with one transferrable skill. That could be Ryan Dunn (overall defense), Hall (rebounding), or a shooting specialist.

Re: 2024 NBA DRAFT THREAD 2
What role is Zach Edey going to have in the NBA? Whenever I think about this, my mind always goes to Valanciunas. Isn't Edey just a bigger, slower, version of what JV was early in his career?
JV strengths
- rebounding
- setting screens
- scoring around the basket
- free throw shooting
JV weaknesses
- perimeter defense (or in general, guarding anyone in space)
- running up and down the court (remember the year when JV was bulking?)
- shooting jump shots (he didn't shoot 3s at all until his 6th season)
- passing
Edey has a little bit better shot blocking from his length, and his free throw shooting is a bit worse. Other than that, to me, he's like an extreme version of JV. His strengths are stronger, and his weaknesses are weaker.
So, the question is do you want a good scorer / rebounder as your center who is bad at passing, doesn't shoot threes, and needs to play drop coverage?
I think team fit is going to be very important for Edey. There are going to be teams that take advantage of his strengths, and can cover for his weaknesses. The Raptors would have to make some big adjustments to be one of those teams, we can't just plug and play him into what we're doing currently. On offense, Darko likes to use his centers as a playmaking hub. His ideal center would be a Jokic or a Sabonis, and guys like Poeltl, Olynyk, and J.Porter all have enough passing to play this role. With Edey, you do not want him operating at the top of the key with the ball in his hands. Edey is either posting up and looking for and entry pass, establishing offensive rebounding position, or setting screens in a pick and roll action. On the defensive side of the ball, the Raptors like to switch a lot, and have their centers out guarding the perimeter all the time. One of the reasons they drafted Poeltl way back in 2016 was because of his lateral quickness on defense. They really valued how he could come out to the three point line, and then quickly move back to protect the rim. Koloko, a recent draftee, offered similar defensive agility.
I personally like Zach Edey, and think he'll be a good NBA player. I would happily add him to the team, and adjust how we play when he is the game. I'm not sure if current management is going to be interested in doing that, though.

This draft class leaves me a bit cold, so I'm hoping we don't move up in the lottery. I'm getting the vibes of 2006.
I'm curious what the Spurs are hoping for. Has there ever been a time when a team refused the conditions of a pick and conveyed it?

I was thinking the exact same thing. Seems slow to gather himself . Make up his mind then moves. Once he moves it doesn’t seem quick or deliberate.
Something about his movements make make wary to take him with the first two picks. However I don’t have huge expectations of the pick

I don’t think they would be mad if pick don’t convey but they probably hope it convey. Pick #7 would be quite a coup for them despite draft being underwhelming.
Always a small risk for them that pick never convey
