If Boucher isn't in the Raps long term future I think he may still get moved on draft night if there is someone there that the Raps want.
Filling in Siakams spot for a few games isn't going to be too challenging, we need some shooting and size in free agency regardless so bringing in a guy like Mo Wagner or some other big guy who can shoot makes Boucher less indispensable if a deal presents itself at the draft.
I can’t figure out the Boucher situation at all. He’s on a reasonable deal and (I think) would likely sign a team-friendly deal to stay next summer. I get that we wouldn’t want to invest big money into him for tax and cap reasons, but I also don’t know what his market will be. He seems like he’s pretty close to his ceiling, so it’s hard to see a team paying him to be a starter. He’s also not a center, so someone would pay him to be a starting 4 and that position is a lot easier to fill salary wise than the others. At the same time, his role likely won’t increase a lot this year with us, so some team would be paying him based on the bench role he has with us and not starters minutes. I can’t see him asking for a trade (it just doesn’t seem like his personality) but that might be the best situation for him if he could be moved to a team that would give him a bigger role - but is that really even out there? If we move him, a team that would give up a first is likely one that’s at a similar level to us and therefore his role likely wouldn’t even increase in that scenario.
From our standpoint, if you move Boucher, you’ve got to replace those minutes. Which, that’s doable, but you’re probably taking an on-court hit. I could see them wanting to take on a controlled younger player as opposed to paying Boucher a bigger deal next summer - but also, if you’re moving Boucher you’re likely getting worse this coming season. If you want to compete this year, Boucher absolutely helps that cause and you’re probably not getting a rookie who can bring that kind of immediate impact with a mid-to-late first round pick, which is realistically what he and his contract are worth.
Maybe one of the more interesting decisions for us this summer. I think the most likely outcome is that he is brought back. You can give him a 3 year deal next summer at age 29, maximize on his prime years, and then he can get another deal after that one. If Siakam is moved, I think we can sign him to a value deal that would be worth having around even in a rebuild scenario.
