Fairly long write-up about NAW and Toronto. Mostly, speculative, but I have always liked how hard he plays. I know PIstons and Hawks are supposed favorites, but what if NAW prefers to play at home? Is that a swing factor?
Following Minnesota’s reported agreements with Naz Reid on a five-year, $125 million deal and Julius Randle on a three-year, $100 million contract, as first reported by ESPN, all eyes shift to what’s next for Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
The Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, and Toronto Raptors, along with other teams, are expected to pursue Alexander-Walker in free agency, league sources told HoopsHype.
Within league circles, the Pistons and Hawks are considered the top candidates to land Alexander-Walker heading into free agency.
The Houston Rockets will have the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception available to go after a player of Alexander-Walker’s caliber. However, such a scenario would depend on their appetite to go above the luxury tax. Houston will pursue Los Angeles Lakers free-agent forward Dorian Finney-Smith, league sources told HoopsHype.
Orlando was also linked to Alexander-Walker, but that was before the Magic acquired Desmond Bane.
The Timberwolves would love to retain Alexander-Walker, league sources say, but they’ll face stiff competition and the prospect of going above the second apron, which won’t bode in their favor.
While the other teams listed are considered playoff-caliber teams, it’s worth noting that the Raptors love Toronto natives on their roster and had Canadians RJ Barrett, Chris Boucher, AJ Lawson, and Kelly Olynyk – who was eventually traded to the New Orleans Pelicans – on their roster during the 2024-25 season.
Alexander-Walker, a Toronto native, is expected to garner the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception in free agency as his floor with the potential to surpass that threshold, according to various executives around the league who spoke with HoopsHype.
Given the new deals for Reid and Randle, many within league circles believe Alexander-Walker won’t return to Minnesota.
