This was written from that Purtle trade.
It should have been a trade to send OG and SiAkam instead to bringing in Jak.

It would be a waste season if we didn't trade OG /Siakam and "still hunt for play-in" right now.

With the 7th pick the Spurs select Nikola Jokic

Not entirely, but if pressed for a binary yes/no, I'd say yes.

Trading OG/Siakam in the off season would have prevented it. We basically wasted at least 30 games this season doing absolutely nothing, just to end up trying to blow it up, in a year without a pick. Scottie breaking his hand, while obviously not the FOs fault in any way, was the icing on the cake as to how much they've mismanaged this whole process.

Make the trades in the off season, we likely have a worse record come end of season and probably keep our pick. Don't trade Jak, even with the trades taking place mid way through the season, we still keep our pick. This season was not a complete waste, but a lot of wasted time.

I'm happy we (sorta) have a direction, but still irritated that as usual, too much time was taken to make the necessary moves. If we make any sort of moves this summer that are not acquiring assets etc, then yeah, complete waste of a season. But I won't dock them points now for something they haven't/might not do at all.

Yes.

Some positives would have happened anyways. But overall, the delayed moves have set the team's future behind a lot. Now, some could view finally making moves as a positive I guess. For me, wasting time and opportunity is a huge negative.

This entire season is about feeling like this and it's only because of the OG trade

Image

In case some people are too dense to understand - the bottom place finish represents opportunities Masai wasted over the past 18 months, not selling much earlier and getting more assets back - the champagne popping represents homers celebrating Masai finally choosing the rebuild direction forgetting everything else.

When would you have traded O.G./ Siakam ?

What are the “more asset back”?

It’s unlikely that O.G would have fetch much more than Quickley, Barrett and early second.

As for Siakam, I don’t think his value was that high. I think his value was higher during summer 2022 but it’s understandable that the FO kept him after a strong 2021-22 season.

Last TDL 2023, it’s unclear how better were the offers

I would bet the offers were indeed better. But it’s unclear if the difference was that significant

There was a rational of Acquiring Poeltl, not trading FVV and keeping Bruce Brown post TDL 2024

But IMO those three decisions delay the rebuild more that the timing of trading O.G/Siakam

I am finally happy we choose a direction.

You have your direction.
Along with lower assets.
Along with likely no 2024 first round pick.
Along with another wasted season with cheap Barnes.

No surprises from me

What people overlook in the OG deal is acquiring 2 solid players fills the starting lineup already minus the C. You have room for 1 more starting calibre 2, 3 or 4 depending on where you position RJ & Scottie. As the other 3 players, as a whole, lack in shot creation, you need to pursue a scorer. However, this leaves the 4 man unit as likely kind if mediocre on the defensive side.

Dick is the wild card, but you hope he can be neutral defensively at some point? I just don't know here.

So, on a valuation basis, one might view the trade as solid. But on a rebuilding basis towards legit contending status, is it?

That's why they should pursue options in improving the C position immediately. There are interesting prospects there in next 2 drafts.

remaining schedule:

vs NO
@ PHX
@ POR - possible win
@ DEN
@ DET - possible win
vs ORL
@ ORL
vs SAC
vs OKC
@ WAS - possible win
vs BRK - possible win
vs NYK
vs PHI
vs LAL
@ MIN
@ MIL
vs WAS - possible win
vs IND
@ BRK - possible win
@ MIA
@ MIA - possible win (could be meaningless game for MIA)

Lets say they win all the 'possible win' games and lose the rest, they'd go 7-14 the rest of the way, ending the season 30-52. Memphis would need to go 11-10 the rest of the way to get to 31 wins.

Or, you package a combination of RJ, IQ, Dick, Poeltl for an upgrade when you're closer to contention. As long as you build up the value of your players and they're playing well, they can always be dealt. The Raps ultimately packaged core players together in order to add key pieces like Kawhi and Gasol. The Raps really shouldn't have any untouchables at this point, with the exception of Barnes.

I believe the front office has shifted gears on player acquisitions to target players that want to play here. Long overdue. However, that is going to limit trade possibilities, especially with older players. The draft needs to be prioritized.

Poeltl trade was terrible.

But I think Masai has done a fine job avenging that loss with the Knicks and Jazz deals.

OG + Precious for IQ + RJ + KO + Ochai

Yes. Barnes, RJ and Quickley.

The Duke wrote:Along with lower assets.

Yes, we don't have an all-star to trade. But we still have moveable contracts and all our picks beyond this season.

The Duke wrote:Along with likely no 2024 first round pick.

We have the Pacers pick. Currently pick 15 and trending into the lottery. Conveying our pick at 7-9 while getting the Pacers pick at 12-15 is a best case scenerio moving forward IMO. It opens up all our future assets going forward by removing protections.

On the flip side of the coin all the extra reps for our young guys is a positive. Shame about Barnes's injury in this regard. But it will give him a ton more time for his body to recover before next season.

Which was the 30th overall pick.
Hence, why I didn't include the 31st overall pick that we got from New York.

Those two picks cancelled out.

(Not to mention, you can easily argue that the 31st is more valuable given it's cap flexibility.)
