That's true for the future, but maybe they want to beat the new BIG 3 while Kobe is still in his prime.

Calderon / Blake
Kobe / Brown
Artest / Hedo
Lamar / Character
Gasol / ?????

If they could fill in the blanks at the forward/centre position they'd be a better team. The Laker team looked dominated this year . . . until teams started giving them open threes. Artest clanked them and Fisher was super inconsistent.

Imagine Kobe and Gasol going to work against Bosh and Wade, while Artest focuses on Lebron and Lamar slashes to the basket. Imagine you had Calderon and Hedo come in and set up at the three point line. They would be the better team if they can stock up on three point shooters. Hedo facilitating and letting Kobe go to work makes him a better player.

But the Lakers would be crazy to take on all that salary. Insane. Plus they have no back up bigs. Maybe give them Ed Davis to sell the deal? I would.

Calderon / Blake
Kobe / Brown
Artest / Hedo
Lamar / Caracter
Gasol / E. Davis

That team is easily the best in the NBA if they can get another big guy. Haslem makes that team unbeatable. Sign and trade Brown or Farmar for a cheap quality back up.

They offered Mike Miller the full MLE, before they pulled it back because he was taking too long, so they're looking hard for someone decent to backup Kobe and Artest; probably someone who's at least a threat from 3. Besides, at this point they already have a bad contract in Luke Walton who doesn't even play, and Sasha Vujacic who the Laker fans have started to turn on. It's not like they're adding more money. They're simply replace two guys who don't play for a guy who could potentially make a contribution like he did with Orldando, for about the same money these two make.

Fair enough. Will be interesting to see if this goes down. Personally I'd want something a bit cheaper...but I'm probably stingier than the Lakers FO is.

I would be down for this, it sounds plausible. That's one less bad longterm contract on this team.

Turk would do well in the triangle and they could play some pretty big ball if they chose to with Turk in the lineup.

Homer Jay wrote:From a contract stand-point you say yes every time. With Kobe, Pau, Bynum, Odom, Artest... the Lakers will not be a free-agent player anytime soon, so Turk's deal doesn't really affect them that way. But honestly Fisher is getting close to 40, and they need a PG. Farmer isn't good, and Brown is a SG who gets time at PG because of Kobe's 40 mins a night. Jose makes sense for them as well, but I don't see how we can get Turk and Jose to them, without them gutting their roster to send us back the matchings, ebanks and draft picks won't cut it.

they just signed Steve Blake, did they not?

You don't accomplish that by trading a very good center for an aging backup SF. Bynum isn't just better than Hedo in the future...he's considerably better now.

That being said Turk would be perfect for the Lakers IF HE DIDN'T make twice the amount he should.

Imagine Turk shooting all those wide open threes that Artest took in the playoffs. The Lakers would've won much, much easier. Turk is still an amazing three point shooter. When he's got his feet set he's got to be a 45-50% three point shooter.

Plus he'd be perfect in the triangle. Great passer that could handle the ball. I guess with Odom there he's not quite as needed, but he'd still make them a better team. He's also huge and would be the perfect passer to Gasol.

But no way the Lakers lock up that much salary.

making this deal essentially gives them hedo for half of what he makes considering we are taking on luke walton... hedo for 5 million essentially is a freakin steal for the lakers

I know it doesn't make any sense for the future. Bynum is better now, but did you see the playoffs? Bynum was not really effective and they were a better team with Lamar in. They've been a better team when Lamar comes in for quite some time now. He always finishes the games.

I just think Hedo's creating and three point shooting would be more valuable in the short term than Bynum's gimpy minutes to start the game before he's pulled for Odom. It's clear that Phil Jackson does not like Bynum at all. He rips him, pulls and benches him to finish the game.

Hedo is not the answer due to his age and contract, but the Lakers would improve with the three point shooting and play making with a Blake-Kobe-Hedo-Lamar-Gasol line up to finish games.

That's because Bynum was playing on one leg; he should be back healthy by training camp. It's also not as if Hedo would be finishing games over any of their forwards, either...unless they get him essentially for free, he doesn't really serve any useful purpose.

Maybe the Lakers haven't been paying attention the past year and all they remember is the amazing finals Hedo had against them. :lift:
