He's not.
And also, Mozgov please.
Mozgov, purely from a statistical standpoint, is not as good as Valanciunas.
Worse career ORating, worse career DRating, worse career rebounding%, worse career TS%, worse career turnover%, worse career Win Shares per 48.
He's also 6 years older than Valanciunas.
Why use career numbers? Mozgov was a project when he came to the league. They both played 70+ games last year and had relatively equal stats on the offensive end. Where Mozgov is much better is on the defensive side where he ranked 7th in the league in rim protection (47% vs 52% for Val). Synergy also shows his superior ability in postup defense and his on/off numbers show his value on the defensive end.
Now Val is only 22 while Mozgov is 28, so he's still a pup while Mozzy is in the prime of his career. I just don't any reason to believe that, right now, Val is better than Mozgov.
I used career numbers because both players have played a similar amount of minutes in the NBA. Valanciunas is also somewhat of a project as well, he's not a grizzled veteran, so I don't think it's as egregious as you're making it seem.
This season in particular, Valanciunas has been more impressive statistically. Similar defensive ratings (Val leading the charge in DRating and Mozgov having a very small advantage in NET DFG%), but with Valanciunas crushing on the offensive side of the ball, and in rebounding.
Small sample size, but if you look at the big picture (career stats) and the small picture (this season), Valanciunas has outperformed Mozgov. If we're talking strictly last season, then yes, Mozgov has the edge (it's not a gaping chasm though).
