Which means....4 of those blocks which made ppl jump up and down in a tantrum were no more relevant than a deflected ball that went out of bounds on the perimeter leading to an inbound. In other words....the type of play that don't bug the casual fan at all or cause them any frusteration.
This is why our coaching staff keeps on telling fred to keep driving. Because good things happen when he does and there's positive downstream consequences....while the downside is not actually a REAL analytics downside for anyone except the casual fan who watches basketball for the raw athleticism-type highlite reels.
The comparison between a blocked fred drive and a deflected perimeter pass (both which do not result in a possession change) is key. A deflected perimeter pass has NO positive downstream consequences. A blocked fred drive does. It backs off the defense from future plays. It stops the defense from cheating future passes. It also has an effect on referee foul calls. (When u keep driving u start getting calls).
The deflected perimeter pass is worthless. No upside.
Yet one makes us mad....and the other we are indifferent to. Our emotional responses to those 2 plays are backwards.
If u don't watch the raptor broadcast i suggest you do when Alvin is doing commentary. He gets it. The positive gains from a pg driving to the bucket are not limited to the specific outcome of the play. There are downstream consequences/gains in doing it.
Another way of phrasing this....if fred goes a game without getting blocked going to the rim....that's a sign he's not being aggressive enough. And there's a cost to that which is not apparent to most eye tests.
In studying fred's body language....i think it's safe to say he does not like driving the rim. He's being instructed and encouraged to do it because the analytics guys have worked this out. Ofc it's not fun to get blocked. But he's doing it anyway. And it pays off in the long run.
Winning basketball is sometimes at odds with our emotional responses. We should be thankful our team's best player is dedicated enough to winning to be willing to put up with y'alls emotional responses and bizarre hate.
In our 5 games so far...fred has laid three gems. Celtics, bulls, pacers. All 3 were allstar level performances. But this board is rampant with ignorance.
Same thing happened last season with the fred hate. Thought many ppl would be tired of being proven wrong about fred. Apparently not.
I, on the other hand, have not been consistently wrong about fred. I said he would threaten for all defense last year and several posters said that was ridiculous. He should have gotten it. Was snubbed. But noone here thinks he didnt end up being a threat. Lots of his critiques on this board weren't even acknowledging his defense until they had to succomb to what became public knowledge.
This year....i'm saying allstar team. Not that i really care because fred is about winning basketball. Not highlite reels. He'll at least threaten for an allstar spot. Might get snubbed. But noone will think it is ridiculous.
A common sentiment in our gamethreads: "one of the worst pgs in the league"...."second worst pg in league"...."no vision"....never seen something like this on this board since i started reading it. I made a thread about this same thing one year ago. Unbelievable.
Wrong about fred again clowns. How many times is that now?
And another thing. I doubt that most ppl, including the author who made this thread, know where "bet on yourself" came from. It's genesis was from when Fred broke with tradition and told teams to NOT draft him with a late second round pick....becayse there was more upside in going undrafted but much less financial security in getting drafted.
And you guys sitting in here and saying it all snarky eh? Like it's something to mock huh. We wouldn't have FVV if he didnt "bet on himself" and also we wouldn't have won a championship.
Don't believe that? Games 4, 5 and 6 against the bucks......Fred shot 14 for 17 from 3. The best 3 game shooting streak in NBA playoff history. In those same games he was a combined +65. We don't beat the bucks without him clowns.
