Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
I haven't seen any Orlando games yet, but Suggs looks extremely underwhelming stats-wise (11.6/3.6/3.6 on 40 TS% with 18 TOV). He does have the 3rd best NetRTG among Magic players, but it just seems like he is being propped up by his teammates.PrinceAli wrote:mdenny wrote:Suggs tonight: 3/11, 8 points, 4 turnovers
Just took a look at the Magic subreddit and their game thread from tonight’s game.
Lots of Magic fans are starting to express their frustrations and saying basically all he can do is hustle and dive for the ball. Cant handle, cant shoot, make bad reads and stupid turnovers, and saying he looks lost out there.
Friday will be interesting. Orlando has been blown out 3 times and their one win came on the backs of Anthony putting up 29/16/8 on 76 TS% and Ross exploding for 22 points in the 4th.

Also Scottie could very well end up better than some of these guys he gets compared to. I'd rather just let Scottie be Scottie, though its okay to point out similarities of a single in game move or action of scottie that resembles something his predecessor's or contemporaries did/do.
Well Giannis is a little bigger yet Scottie already shows a better midrange touch. I'd say Kawhi is a more accurate comparison as even though he scores mostly inside, he has bigtime perimeter play potential.
But unlike Kawhi he can actually playmake. If he can develop a consistent jumpshot he has the potential to have no real weakness. Kawhi was a 2 year college player, Siakam came off the bench and even DeRozan never dribbled his first year.
Think of how Giannas' lack of shooting was constantly exposed till half the league went on IR. So thats the biggest question.
Unlike say Suggs where it's like will he finish decently? Lol.
Either way this is clearly the bottom and can only go up.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
I think Barnes and Mobley are the clear cut top 2 players from this draft class so far.
We’ll see what Cade brings to the table.

Not really a good comparison, as said before the draft, the handling and passing would be similar, but Barnes is not a PF/C, he has been guarding PG and scoring against smaller players. He is more a wing or guard.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
Right now I feel Barnes is developing very well, getting playmaking and scoring opportunities. When Siakam comes back though, Barnes will get less chances on offense and less time with the ball in his hands, if not less mins.

Even in the side-by-side you can just see how much more long, fast and explosive Giannis is. It's not a fair comparison for literally any other player in NBA history. Dude is the freak of all freaks.
Barnes has looked special so far and has overwhelming size/length compared to most of the league, but Giannis is just something else.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
I watched a lot of his high school highlights,
I watched a lot of his collage highlights,
I watched him play in the summer league for the raptors
He was always animated, clapping his hands, yelling and dancing, slapping the floor. Giving players looks
He seems to have really toned it down (relatively speaking). I saw flashes of it in his first pre-season game and it still comes out here and there (Boston game after the dunk) but does not seem as animated anymore.
I wonder if people told him to tone it down? Is that generally considered a bad look for a young player/rookie?
I actually liked the fire that I saw him play with in collage/high school and summer league.

The list of guys who've put up 85 points and 40 boards over their first 5 games is pretty short I believe. If you perform that well that early, you've got a real high chance of at being an elite player.

Probably Fred. You can't do stuff to demoralize the other team if you're losing games. He's probably just trying to fit in for now and as he gets better and more comfortable and as the team gets better, we'll see that side come out more often.
So the message for now is probably focus on winning, you can do all that extra stuff once you/we are established.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
In that Bos game, when his putback dunk pushed our lead to 23 with 3 min left in the game, he celebrated with a yell and chest bumped FVV. It was a deserved celebration but looks like rubbing salt in the wound for Bos, celebrating like that in a blowout. Nurse promptly called a timeout - and subbed Barnes and other starters out - my first thought was Nurse didn't want some retaliation from Bos for that. If so, for sure Nurse would have talked to Barnes after the game about celebrating like that in that situation.

Google the well known story about Magic and Kareem in Magic's first game as a pro.
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

The Boston game, Smart hammered Fred. Next play, Barnes hammered Smart and they had a bit of a back and forth.
He's awesome, he's 20 and not scared of the moment.

Interesting
He seems super liked,
Beal, Kidd, Kuzma, Donavan Mitchell and others genuinely seem to like him a lot (Just based on their interviews)
Giannis and Westbrook are one of the most visually demonstrative players in the league but I guess they also were pretty tame in their rookie year. I think once he establishes himself, he will show his true self in the league.

The other Scottie.

“What I wanted was another great athlete,” Krause told The Vertical of drafting Pippen. “I think defensively so much. My mind is so much geared, going all the way back … I’ve always been defense-oriented. What I saw in Pippen was a chance to be a great defensive player. I saw a guy with long arms and quick feet and big hands and all the things — who couldn’t shoot. He was not a good shooter. Now, when I first saw Michael Jordan, he wasn’t a good shooter either. Shooting can be improved. It’s a skill, it can be worked at. What I saw in Pippen was a guy that could guard ones, twos, threes and fours, and I fell in love with that.”

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
Barnes is probably the most well-liked player in his draft class too. So even though he has that reputation I think guys understand especially when they play with Scottie for Team USA. But I think Scottie also realizes that this team isn’t winning over 70% of their games like he’s used to so toning it down probably is a good idea.

You can already see the respect from the Refs also, he's talking the whole game. Normally, they don't listen.
