I would say the second most important stretch of the season (the most being the stretch of games they lost as soon as our guys came back from covid). Lose this week and we're set for the draft. Win this week and we shoot ourselves in the foot.
Just for our own mental health, it's fair to pick a reasonable target. Right now we're in 7th, with 31.9% odds of a top five (actually top 4 - 5th spot would be impossible) pick. I don't think Raptors can drop to 5th or below, without angering the Lord of Basketball Karma. We must appease them while continuing the stealth tank.
6th may be attainable, with 36.2% chance of a top 4 pick. But that's only 4.3% more, and would require the expenditure of a ton of anxiety points. We should be happy where we are - in 7th spot (19 wins).
Now, who is the enemy? First, the teams just behind us in wins. Bulls (20 wins) have to be in win-now mode. They have no defence, but Lavine and Vuc should win them a few games. Sacramento (22 wins) just acquired this hot new prospect who should shoot them into a few extra wins. Unquestionably the biggest power tank right now is being conducted by OKC (20 wins). It's really hard to see them winning another game this season. It was great to lose to them, but they are going to blow past us at some point.
That means to stay in 7th, we have to overtake two of the 17-win teams ahead of us - Wizards, Magic and Cavs. Magic are playing with bounce, and were 18 points up on the Nuggets at the half last night, but they just don't have a star that will uplift them. They NEED a top five pick. Jeff's not stupid.
So Cavs and Wizards are the real enemies, as they have been so often in recent Raptors history. Cavs have young talent they want to develop. And they want to prove Love can still play so they can trade him this summer. I can see them winning some games. Watching Sexton destroy the Raps a few weeks gives cause for hope, and I've always liked Jarrett Allen. NP.
Wizards, those bastards. WTF is going on with Beal? Is the plan to definitely trade him this summer - so they won't play him for the rest of the season? And Silver is going to allow this? Definitely an offence to the Lord of BB Karma. They're not gonna make it out of Jan Vesely territory in the lottery, but we NEED that 7th spot. We DESERVE that spot. Until the end of the season, this will be the hardest fight for the Raps since the Sixers series. We must lose tonight. Failure is not an option. Don't ever come back to Toronto if you win.
