Yeah but are they worth it?

He hasn't justified maxing out his price tag.

Plus we can't really afford it.

Why do you think we are "maxing out his price tag" and also what does that even mean?

He is maxing himself out and will probably go to the highest bidder.

He was sitting on the bench for a few months. Money will spent.

Norm started 8 games all year... What are you even going off about at this point?

Norm started 8 games
Trent started 44 games

There stats are almost equal, but one guy coming off the bench.

So you bring up "Trent sitting on the bench" but do not see the irony of that considering Powell literally is a bench guy?

Stats being equal when Norm is the #1/2 option off the bench does not benefit your arguement the way you think it does. Norm averaged 13/3/2 on 51TS% as a starter this year. Are Norms' numbers inflated as he beats up on inferior competition?

Giving long term big(ish) money to borderline starters is usually a losing proposition. It might have worked out with Powell but this team is never going to give a role player a 4-5 year deal because those go sour quick in about 90% of the cases.

Every once in a while you get a Powell. 90% of the time you get a Fournier, Robinson or Rozier and you get screwed.

No, when I say sitting on the bench I mean literally on the bench not playing.

Trent was mia for a few games.

Norm averaging a 60ts%, close to 50 fg and 40 from 3 for his career is an outlier.

Meanwhile fvv and career sub 40% fg is the definition for leadership and consistency.

When? The only game I can see he dressed and did not play was in November against Detroit - so one game?

Norm Powell at age 24? Dressed and did not play in 10 games.

What does FVV have to do with this conversation

And by "50FG%" you mean 46%, and by "40% from 3" you mean 38%, and by 60TS%, you mena 59TS%.

I did not realize I can just round every stat up to the nearest 10!

No he missed a stretch of games in March and April.

But the fact is that he was a starter that has equal stats to a bench player.

Norm is older and plays 10mins less than Trent.

They prioritized Fred and siakams development as the one and two and thought they could lead young players like they were the reincarnation of pippen and Jordan. The money and age argument was always so dumb considering gtj got the same amount of money just a smaller contract and Norm is the same age as siakam and fvv. He was homegrown, already had chemistry and yet for some reason they needed to get younger. And at the time, you can pull up receipts, I said gtj didn't even have Norman's peak potential since he lacked athleticism, handle, first step, finishing ability and all of his offense was predicated on shooting jumpers. I have no idea what this front office was thinking. Actually I do. Like I said, they thought he was essentially equal value and being slightly worse at that position wouldn't matter because siakam and fvv would lead the way and elevate eceryone anyway.

I remember at the time media and a bunch of people on this board kept blaming norm for our **** defense. Look who were blaming now. Lmao. Can anyone see siakam or fvv scoring 40 points on playoff defense? On that efficiency? Whatever Norm wasn't gonna win us a championship anyway, but we definitely would've been a more fun team to watch. The only saving grace now would be blowing it up.

Numerous poster dumped on Boogie for years for having the nerve to point out that Norm deserved the same development opportunities as Fred. That Boogie was a Fred hater. Boogie would disappear for months and come back and the comments would be, "Look who is back, the Fred-hater."

Look where a large percentage of this board is with Fred now. We want him gone even if we get nothing back. Who would have said the same for Norm? Who would have accepted nothing back for Norm?

Masai didn't trade Norm because he wanted to tank that year. Norm was traded because he was a pending free agent and they didnt want to pay him. Same thing Masai tried to do this year with FVV but failed.

If he took a shot and the trade failed, whatever it happens. But it was a half assed approach trading Norm and keeping the other older part of the core in FVV/Siakam. Should've kept Norm at that point or traded them all.

You just did not understand what was happening with the team if you still think Norman should not have been traded.

Norman HAD to be traded as he had mastered the system so much that he had become the team's best player (meaning salary-wise, he would have had to be on par with Pascal, had he stayed): However, FO and all of us have known that he is not that kind of player (All-NBA player) hence he had to be traded!

Great game last nite, but Norman misses too many games: Last season he played only 45 games and this season 60.

Because that lesser player is younger and you're banking on his improvement

And giving Gary a 2 year contract was insane. If the point of trading Norm was money, then giving Gary the opportunity to cash in, or leave, after just two years was nuts. Now I can accept the logic of trading a pending FA for a younger player, but I don't get it if that younger player only has a short wait until he gets the same money. We should have had Gary on the same money he is paid now for two more years. Then we could determine much better if he is worth the bag.

Gary was RFA and was assumed to be a cheaper option. Norm wasn't restricted and was assumed he would leave.

He clearly had less skill than Powell even being younger. Again powell probably wouldn't have made us much better overall but our offense would've been much more efficient for sure and his consistency means we wouldn't have yo rely on other players to carry the load. But again that's what the fo wanted. Like I said, they wanted to bu8ld up fvv (barf) and siakam as the stars of yhe team, and probably wanted more out of og as well. Again I already made assessments on all these players years ago. Just 3 wasted years later here we are trying to move on from them.

I'm happy for Norm, he's maximized his potential as a 6th man shooter w/ some drive chops that minimizes the other holes in his game.

The OP question is weird - clearly the team was taking a swing on a (then) 22 year old to see if he could develop into a higher ceiling. Norm turns 30 next month, Gary just turned 24 in January. Neither is going to dramatically alter the trajectory of a roster, but it's pretty easy to understand the move from the Raps' perspective imo.
