He was good while he was here. No need to bash the guy.

He's an in game adjustment wizard when he has the players. He was a big part of why we won the championship IMO. I'll be thankful as a fan for as long as I'm around.

I wish nothing but the best for everyone who helped bring us a championship. It’s still hard to believe that actually happened

Yup. And enabled tbe selfish play because he knew he was not going to be here next year.

It's ok to dislike Nurse this past year and still think he is a good coach and appreciate what he dud to help win a championship.

I don’t know if it’s fair to say that he quit on them. He just saw the writing on the wall and mismanaged (IMO) the end of his tenure. But I have no reason to believe that he did anything other than try to win as much as possible.

I blame the front office for this. Once they stayed the course at the deadline (and doubled down with the Poeltl trade), the direction was clear that it was “win as much as possible” to get into play-in.
Any coach will shorten his bench and exhaust the guys he trusts most in that scenario even if it comes at the expense of developing the young players.

Nurse did not have the cachet or power within the organization to go against Masai. If Ujiri wanted the focus to be on development of the kids, then Nurse would have followed orders.

For all the personality issues Nurse had - everything stemmed from Masai's unrealistic ask for Nurse to both compete with a bunch of athletes who can't shoot, and develop the young players (drafted outside the lottery) who are currently barely NBA rotation worthy.

All the problems started at the top

Precisely my point about Nurse.
Sh*t rolls downhill and in the case of the ‘22/‘23 Raptors season, that turd of a season began its decline at the front office level.

Such a smart group of players, they were able to run his off-beat schemes. Rosters after 2020 had trouble doing it

Same. Great, great coach. We may desire his services once again in the future if we're at an appropriate spot for his skillset.

Just too many young players and not enough talent. I don’t necessarily blame Nurse for playing Fred, OG and Pascal so much. They were the only guys he can truly rely on.

Its not that simple, the league caught on to Nick nurse's gimmicks, he should be credited for partially causing the entire league to add more janky defensive sets on this point. But there was a law of diminishing returns to running the same over commit blitz that forced helps with no rim protection. His commitment to not implementing more syst offense was to the detriment of our team and development as well. It's not just talent limitation, the league and competition changed and Nurse didn't adjust macro properly in a couple ways. Not to mention the politics, cliche management, letting assistant Coach put up communication walls...

Tell the whole story...

Could not bring yourself to include Barnes in that group?

I think Barnes would fit in the young players group. You know as he's still only 21...

Yeah, he was trying to win with a funky, experimental, unbalanced roster that wasn't coming together. I'm sure it was frustrating for him, too, and there's probably a lot he could have done better. There could have been so many things going on, yet half the board is convinced that Nick Nurse was this toxic saboteur based on mostly fan-constructed narratives. The guy has been our best coach to date.

I don't remember any Raptors players talking badly about Nurse; but I do remember players saying they liked playing for him. Yes, he's called out some players in public; but he's also been a winning coach at multiple levels of basketball over a long period of time and strategic call-outs have probably worked for him in the past.

Then there's Fred. Then there's Masai and/or Bobby. Yeah, last season was a failure, but all of these guys were part of some of the greatest years in the Raptors' history. Now the deck is being shuffled. This "what have you done for me lately" shtick among the fanbase is getting so old. Time to stop beating the dead horse and move on, fellas. It's Darko time.

I'll miss Nick's personality. Easily the most interesting coach the Raps have ever had. In a good way. We've had a lot of weirdos - Butch "the Litigator" Carter, Kevin "Breaker of Lamps" O'Neill, Sam "Bodyslam" Mitchell, Dwane "the Rock" Casey.

Nick deserves a ton of credit for the success Canada is having in Fiba.

Program wouldn't be anywhere near what it is now without him.
