Guess, they couldn't find takers for their garbage backup SG's while helping shed salary at the same time. This team should not be a tax team as-is.
So much negativity for the 20th man on the team signed to a contract that can be waived.
Just calling it what it is.
His deal's non-guaranteed but it sounds like they very much intend to keep him beyond the deadline. And no matter how you slice and dice this, Mo Bamba just isn't a very good player at 27 years old after having been given all kinds of opportunities by multiple teams over the years.
Raptors seemingly have shown strong desire to get under the tax line so even they themselves agree they shouldn't be a tax team and for them to do this now for someone like Bamba does not look good on multiple fronts: whether it be Poeltl injury, the team getting under the 1st apron, or trade market for our backup SG's.
If none of this sounds positive to you, maybe that's just how things are.
Now I’m not saying Bamba is a perfect player, but he has averaged over 10 and 8 with over a block a game over a full season in the NBA. Most of the other big options suggested in another thread here just didn’t have that or were considerably older than Bamba.
Could he improve? Sure. Is it 100% guaranteed? Absolutely not - which is why he’s available. He’s in that limbo area and this could very well be his last shot.
He’s insurance for our team beyond his play alone in that he provides additional leverage. Teams can’t force us to overpay for a backup big the way they could previously. I’d argue signing him improves our return in a trade including Ochai and/or Gradey.
As far as the tax implications - for now I’m looking at it as a 12 day contract until proven otherwise. I’d be more than happy for Bamba to be the next coming of Bebe and actually stick around on a reasonable contract.
If poeltl is indeed suffering from a long term injury my point two paragraphs ago holds even more credence. As far as getting under the tax line, there are plenty of ways to do that and plenty of time before the end of the season.
I dunno, maybe things aren’t as they are, they are how we see them.
I believe in Masai.
