Scottie Barnes will never be a superstar.
And it's not because of his game. His face is just off the charts ugly and unpleasant to look at that he will never be a superstar as a result.
Sorry raps fans you gotta look at that face every game.
We love Scottie's face and at least he'll always be able to play in games no matter the city. Think that over while you take some time off.

Some of the plays Scottie was making last night were elite. Just so much creation for himself and others. This kid is special.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread 2
He’s a bonafide Stud. Barring injuries, he’s definitely an all star caliber player as of next year. Issue is that most likely the entire starting 5 are all star caliber by next year.. FVV/Siakam are already all stars. Barnes/Trent should make the jump and are so young. and OG would definitely be in this conversation if he wasn’t always getting detailed with injuries.
Good starting 5 but, would be nice to send 2 of them away for a Top 7 player. Then build bench with internal growth, small trades and buyout.

Well said. I hope Masai can also acquire a decent 7 foot Centre also, so Barnes does not have to play extended minutes guarding the other team's Centres, and risk extra wear and tear on his body next year. I think Barnes at the 3, and Siakam at 4 can still work. However, getting another legitimate starting Centre in the off-season should be a priority. If that means trading FVV, I will be all for it coming off his all-star appearance. Long-term, I am not sure FVV is the best fit alongside Barnes. To pay him 35 million or so on a new contract, when he is not the quickest guy on the court, more of a 6 foot tall shooting guard with a small wingspan, and with injury problems from time to time, is not the best investment. Also, it allows Barnes to have the ball more and utilize his very good playmaking abilities, which is tough to do at times when FVV is playing alongside him.

While I hope that you’re right, I just think that we’re too far into the season for the narrative to change. We would have to eclipse Cleveland and Barnes would have to play exceedingly well while Mobley plays poorly.

I think it will really depend on the growth of some of our bench players. For example, if Precious, Flynn and Banton make big strides in the offseason then it might be an opportunity to make that big trade. However, I still think we are a couple years away from that.
I also think there is a possibility Scottie is an all-star caliber player by next year but still unlikely. For him to be an all-star he would have to make tremendous strides offensively. What we do know is with that length of his, there are some shots that are nearly impossible to defend and that he can score with both his left and his right. That bodes really well.
His shot has been way better than expected. When he was drafted I was hoping the shooting numbers he's putting up this year would be his 3rd or 4th year numbers. He's way ahead in that regard. Scottie with a reliable jumper is a bonafide all-star.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread 2
There have been plenty of players who because stars before they even developed a jumper. In most cases those players would simply overwhelm defenders with their size and strength. In the case of Barnes, he is on that same trajectory, and while he is very physical, his awkward offensive moves that just work inside, and his ridiculous fundamentals are what's driving him. What's also unprecedented is the in season improvements he has made. Typically those type of developments happen in the offseason.
Saying it will take Barnes 2-3 years to become a star is selling him short, and I get the sense are from people who were against drafting him over Suggs (and are probably too biased to read his feel for the game). Those are projections we would have had BEFORE this season started. Now with he season 2/3 of the way it's very clear that he's well ahead of that, and that he is going to be a star before his jumper gets there. His game is at the point where he CAN be this team's #1 player as early as next season. But you have Siakam there, and Barnes is okay with deferring for now, and it's working fine.
The crazy thing is that he does EVERYTHING on the court, which is why his jumper not being there early in his career hasn't stopped him from looking like stud already. There are a select few who can do that.

Reminds me of Kawhi who improved tremendously during the lockout in 2011 compared to his last college year. Barnes has not even had the benefit of such a long offseason yet.
And Barnes' jumper is better than it was last year. 31% on 2.6 attempts as opposed to 27.5% on 1.7 attempts is an improvement from 3. Especially when you consider that the closeout to shooters is much quicker in the NBA. It's going to take a couple of years but I think his ceiling in that regard is the ability to pull up from 3 off the dribble eventually with a tighter handle. Next season he will simply make a major jump in uncontested and assisted jumpers.
Objectively Mobley was the much superior player in college and even though he has played extremely well, Barnes has completely closed that gap from last year already. This is impossible without elite work ethic.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread 2
What we're seeing from Scottie far exceeds even the most ambitious expectations, but we need to take a step back and temper our short-term expectations a bit. He definitely has the tools and skillset to be an all-star within a season or two and he'll likely be the main hub of our offence by the 23/24 season, but he needs to sustain this high level of play for more than a few games at a time to truly be a star. The consistency just isn't there yet. He hasn't had a stretch of 3-4 great games in a row, but he also hasn't really had bad back-to-back games either aside from when he was coming back from H&S protocols/knee tendinitis and the two games before the break.
It's unrealistic to expect teams to not make any adjustments whatsoever, so he'll need to come back with an advanced game -- especially regarding his jump shooting. It's possible we'll see teams giving him a bit of the Simmons treatment and forcing him to take outside shots in the near future unless he can prove that he's a threat from outside of 15 feet. His three-point shot has improved a lot over the past 6-8 months, but he is still a very inconsistent shooter that is 28% on 3 attempts per game in 2022 so far and about 1/3 of his career 3FGM came in a two-week stretch in early December. Similarly, a large chunk of his midrange makes came in the first ~30 games (33/68) while he has struggled a bit in the new year (19/53). His midrange game has come back as of late (10/18 in the last 10 games), but most of his damage is being done in the paint on mismatches and second chance points since coming back from the ASB; 13 of his 19 PPG are coming in the paint and he's getting to the line 3 times per game.

I think he'll get there. Right now, he's just too strong and he isn't getting calls unless he gets hammered. He'll learn how to embellish and sell calls a bit more. He should at least be a 7-8 FTA/game type of player in his prime.Madhouse wrote:pingpongrac wrote:What we're seeing from Scottie far exceeds even the most ambitious expectations, but we need to take a step back and temper our short-term expectations a bit.
